CONOR FRIEDERSDORF: Paris and the Lessons of 9/11: The U.S. should treat France as France treated the U.S. 14 years ago—by helping the other wage prudent fights and warning its leaders against the rash decisions that trauma can lead to.
Hmm.

I was actually thinking that if the French were to nuke ISIS, it would send a powerful message about the likely future of aggressive Islamic terrorism, while not creating the kind of superpower dynamic that would occur if the US did so. Won’t happen, I guess, but I wonder if there’s someone in France thinking the same thing. If not, there will be after the next attack.

Don’t worry. Obama has no plans on helping them get rid of ISIS.

When I lived in the UK, the French were horrible during the Falklands war as well.

They sold Exocet missiles to Argentina so that country could destroy ships so the French could brag about how good their military equipment is.

While I see the French as the absolute worst of Europe, I would not disregard them in order to defeat an enemy much greater in Islam.

I still remember France refusing us air rights for our bombers when we struck back at Libya for terrorists bombings of bars and discos that killed American soldiers

Bull S**t

France obstructed Bush and the War on Terror because PM Chirac was a bought and paid for shill for Saddam, who had bribed and banked rolled Chiracs entire political career to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

Chirac did serious damage to efforts to check the rise of Radical Islam. France is now reaping he whirl wind on account of Chiracs obstruction, but the rest of the world is suffering much worse than France because of Chirac.

The entire civilized world is in very real danger as the ISIS Jihad gains momentum and Lord help us all if it reaches critical mass and spreads world wide.

If the French are finally waking up to the dangers we face - well, better late than never and we need all the allies we can get to fight back. Surrender Monkey jokes aside, the French are pretty darn fine soldiers and their fliers are top notch.

Let's hope the rest of Europe follows suit.

Remember when people like me warned the French that open borders and soaking up thousands of Muslims from nations hostile to the west would cause nothing but bad and the French laughed, gave us the finger and called us racists?

Yeah, you French can my ass now.

I’m not putting up your fairy flag in some kind of meaningless solidarity with you.

What happened was a tragedy, but you were warned over and over and over again.

The French have always believed they have a special connection with the Arabs. Is France really a part of NATO ?

Or maybe we should treat the French they way they treated us in the 1770s and early 1780s. Sending their sons and fathers to the colonies to die side be side with colonists against a common enemy.

Lest we forget; the French sided with the Nazis during the early years of WWII. Then, as it became apparent that the Allies were going to win they switched sides and joined the Allie war effort. Oh, almost forgot; just prior to the Normandy invasion Ike approached DeGaulle and requested that he send a msg to the French Partisans that the invasion was eminent and to create as much havoc as possible. DeGaulle agreed on the stipulation that he and his troops would be allowed to lead the parade into Paris upon its liberation. Ike, the consumate diplomat, agreed.

Jeanne Kirkpatrick and many other rational people supporter Argentina’s claims to the Falklands. Unfortunately, the Anglophiles (aka the League of Empire Loyalists) won that argument with RR.

My volunteer French bashing.

Throughout most of history, France has pursued nothing but its own narrow self interest. They just aren’t very good at it.
AND
Being French and overtly arrogant as a people and culture, they don’t waste time or energy putting sanctimonious moral lipstick on their foreign policy pigs.

Unlike the Anglo powers, the French do not kill strange little people in backwater locales under some pretense like “spreading rule of law”, or “building democracy”.

The French do it for oil, gas, gold, spice, minerals, ores, land and trade.....of course, their honor may be besmirched as a pretense....but there seems always much oil, gas, gold, spice, minerals, ores, land and trade that balms their wounded ego.

It is said, the French possess all the efficiency of the Greeks, the humility of the Germans, the level headed logic of the Spanish, and mix it with the military prowess of the Italians.

Of course, even with that, they should have no trouble with the Arabs. The Arabs are one of the few cultures that bathe less, posture more, and flee faster from a stand-up fight than even the modern French.

But that is just my opinion, and what do I know.

Most of Argentina’s weapons were from the US; only their best ones were from France. Their battleship (General Belgrano) was from the US as well.

The French DO have a special connection to the Arabs (Muslim & Christian); the reason 10% of France is Muslim is because they colonized Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia (and many emigrated during that period and since).

France wanted neutrality in WWII; when we invaded French North Africa in 1942 many Americans were killed by French troops protecting that neutrality. We offered De Gaulle everything because he would go along with the “liberation” theme (instead of “invasion”). The French remembered, and quickly developed their own nuclear arsenal - and the Germans (and Americans) haven’t been back since.

Sure, and maybe we can enact "slave reparations" while we're on the topic of the government deciding policy over things people did two centuries ago, rather than how their descendants behave today.

As for me, find me someone alive TODAY who was forced into slave labor on a plantation, and find me some brave French royal who sacrificed selflessly for american independence, and I will be more than happy to compensate them. But since all those people have been dead for centuries, I don't "owe" their descendants a damn thing.

Nor did they owe us assistance in a war that was not of their choosing. It was our decision to invade Iraq. They saw no need to go to war with Iraq. They were our allies in the Gulf War.

Iran is not the same as ISIS. We’d be better off nuking Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
