It’s my experience that teachers can be the whiniest people on earth. They will stand right in front of someone who works in the private sector for $30,000 and two weeks’ vacation a year, and they will complain that teachers are “underpaid” and that their two months off “went by SO fast” and “wasn’t enough.” They also get every holiday known to man off, winter break, spring break, etc.
What gets me, too, is when they say things like, “Celebrities and athletes make millions and teachers only make peanuts. The salaries should be reversed.” Just how do they propose to switch the salaries of teachers with celebrities and athletes? Do they even understand how these things work?
These teachers need to be reminded of exactly who they work for. As it is, they are paid with money that is taken from citizens, under threat of force, whether they have kids in school or not. There's no choice - just try not paying your property taxes and see what happens. If teachers want a raise, then more money has to be taken from the people. If that happens, they get their raise without any performance expectations.
“Itâs my experience that teachers can be the whiniest people on earth.”
Oh, it’s because they are “sacrificing for the children!” /barf!
I had the pleasure of addressing this concern once at a family function. I told the young teacher that when students would pay up to $250 a seat per to sit in her class each day and fill up a stadium, then she would definitely pull down the salary of a star athlete.
