Yes. If they, the media, can do that to Carson, they can and will do it all conservatives. I don't like Carson as a candidate either, but that's beside the point.
Conservatives joining liberals in piling on other conservatives have nothing to cry about when their candidate is savaged by the media. We should defend Carson on principle and not because he's not my candidate.
I believe we should search out the truth and defend that. Defending candidates on general principles is very dangerous. Sometimes you wind up holding a bag with something rotten.
That said holding fire until you have all the facts and taking everything in the media with 10000 grains of salt is also good policy before defending or attacking.

First they came for Christie over Bridgegate, but I didn’t mind because I was not in New Jersey.
Then they came for Fiorina over her HP leadership, but I didn’t care because I never held HP stock.
Then they came for Jeb Bush over his brother’s presidency, but I didn’t care because that presidency was so long ago.
Then they came for Carson over his West Point story, but I didn’t care because I don’t think Carson is qualified to be POTUS.
Then they came for Trump over his sleazy career and personal history, but I didn’t care because I thought Trump could never beat Hilary.
Then Ted Cruz rose to the top of the heap and won the nomination. So the MSM came after him with a vengeance never before seen in the modern political age. As a result, Cruz lost to Hilary.
