Lions, and Tigers, and Volkswagens! Oh, my!
Were under assault by a Teutonic Terror. About half a million US diesel cars and 11 million worldwide sold by Volkswagen AG, including VWs, Audis, Seats, and kodas, appear to have software that tricks emissions tests. Actual emissions are 40 times higher were told. And people are dying.
Quatsch! as they say in German. Nonsense! Its just another car mass hysteria, like runaway Toyotas a few years ago and runaway Audis before that. At least one freaked-out occasional car reviewer engaged in public self-flagellation: I was fooled by Volkswagens diesel hypeand Im sorry, she blubbered. She went on to attack the entire notion of clean-running diesel cars and concluded, Two of my closest friends are asking me what will happen with their cars; I have no idea.
No, you really dont, lady. Owners will take their VWs to a shop where the sensors will be fixed. The End.
It’s a great buying opportunity for a TDI V-dub.
Make sure to spin up some owner, get him hysterical, then offer 50% of value.
Drive home smiling.
Does that mean prices on used ones just went down?
I think VW’s response to idiotic government regulations was appropriate: Have the car pass the tests, then have it operate in a way that provided best value to their customers. I don’t recall seeing clouds of black smoke coming out of VW and Audi diesels when they accelerate, unlike my old Chevy Diesel Wagon!
Let’s do throw the beetle out with the bath water...
Prices will only go down on the ones that get “fixed”.
Yes, the VWs will be fixed by forcing the engine to run in 'test' mode all the time, loweering fuel economy and engine life.
If VW engineers could build a diesel that met emissions and met longevity and fuel economy expectations, they would have built it and not have resorted to software tricks.
Won’t Volkswagen AG have to fix the car, no matter who owns it?
Fixing the sensors? What a maroon.
That’s like lowering the crime rate
by reducing murder to a misdemeanor.
If they do that, the cars won't run worth a ####. So then they will have to take the cars to an independent to undo the repairs. If they are in a county where testing is required, then they will have to pay their mechanic to fix and unfix it once a year.
But if you can afford parts for a German car, the expense should be less of a burden than the inconvenience.
Yeah, I was reading in my daily email from some engineering trade mag today about how VW might “compensate” owners for this. If I had one and they offered to “compensate” me, I’d write a letter refusing. They stuck their finger in the enviroweenies eye to give the PEOPLE WHO BUY THEIR PRODUCT the best-performing car and for this we’re supposed to expect compensation??!! That’s how EVERY company is supposed to behave!
Hey, the idiot moms at MADD asked for donations because of the big increase in “drunk driving” after the Sinkmaster lowered the federal BAL rules from 0.10 to 0.08!
Most likely. But the fix will probably mean that the car gets a lot worse mileage.
Then don’t take it in during the recall. Aren’t they voluntary?
Yep. Sort of like what the EPA does on pollution control. They think the ability to measure the concentrations down to smaller and smaller amounts means the pollution can be reduced accordingly.
Yes recalls apply beyond the original owner.
This will be a “jobs program” for the legal industry also, the number of class action lawsuits increases by the day.
I saw one filed here this week in Indiana where a woman claimed she bought a diesel VW because of her concern for manmade climate change and is now traumatized.
I have a diesel Jetta, and I get about 43 mpg. It’s not putting out much waste exhaust at that type of mileage. In fact, I’ve driven behind belching gasoline and diesel engines, and my VW has no detectable odor.
So, my sense is that the standard was ridiculous....the same as they wanted to impose on coal-fired power plants that the courts said was out of touch with reality.
I do not work for VW. I have never worked for VW. I’m just talking about my car, and every version of VW in TDI format.
NOx and particulates are very real.
And they kill people.
What caused Toyota unintended acceleration user error, floor mats impeding on gas pedal or faulty software code we will never know for sure. The info is locked up in nondisclosure settlements.
The problem is not hydrocarbons(black smoke) it is clear NOx and particulates.
Good strategy if you live in area without smog checks.
If you live in area with smog checks the recall fix will be mandatory to re register the car and may severely cut power and fuel efficiency.
