When I had five kids at home and commissions weren't as steady as they used to be (about 20 or so years ago), we went on food stamps

I felt no shame because I was out there hustling and just paying bills ... I needed the assistance and when my slump broke, we dropped the stamps

I never felt shame nor anger .... actually grateful for the availability of a program that was there when needed

My guess, if true.. is that you are in the minority. Way too many folks today find a way to get free money at the expense of taxed folks. This has become a joke among those that get the freebies but it does leave a mark on the rest of us. Eventually, this will result in a decrease in benefits and a requirement to actually work for a living OR major decreases in all of our living standard because of the increased debt (which will happen eventually).

And there in lies the rub this chick is missing...

Gratitude,

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you as the saying goes.
