Our moms and grandmas were the best cooks in the world...and they used gobs of mayo and Miracle Whip for all the delicious salads, sandwiches and other goodies that we LOVED to eat growing up...and which we long for today.

We had no picky, picky, picky eaters in those days like you see today....and on this thread. That's 'cause these poor souls didn't grow up with good cooks in the family, cooks that made things from scratch, with lot of real butter, real cream, real everything.

We weren't laden with today's sensitivities and fears about what was in everything we ate, we just scarfed it all down...and after the meat and potatoes we were given a big helping of a calorie-laden homemade dessert rife with creme and custard and gooey frosting from my immigrant grandpa's German bakery.

And our grandmas and moms made delicious gravy, also...a lost art today. That's because modern animals and fowl are raised to be oh-so lean and fat-less to satisfy the food-nuts....and the wonderful flavor of gravy is, of course, to be found in the fatty drippings and scrapes.

C'monna my house for dinner and you'll swoon from happiness and contentment as you wipe the mayo and delicious gravy from your satisfied lips and then treat yourself to a couple slices of decadent coconut cream pie with a big mug of hot black, strong, caffeinated coffee...um, um, GOOD!

Bon appetit!

Leni

Life is not worth living w/out Hellman’s REAL mayo.

One unusual way I used mayo that was utterly delicious-——leftover Chinese takeout had very little sauce left.

So I added mayo and mixed it in.

The mayo took on the Chinese flavors and made an unctuous sauce for the leftovers.

Darn straight on cooking the old-school way. It just tastes better. None of that low-fat crap here, either. And tomorrow I make lasagna! Ground round, Italian sausage, homemade sauce and tons of cheese! It weighs about 15 pounds...

My 2¢ is Miracle Whip is for salads. I use Burman's real mayo from Aldi, less than two bucks for a big jar, go through several a year. Walmart wants almost $4 a jar, no way.

I have my grandmother's recipe for mayonnaise. Mainly it's a basic vinaigrette with a couple of eggs (raw) added and some "secret" condiments in proper proportions. It is the best mayo I've ever had. Beats anything bought off the shelf.

She also taught me how to make gravy the right way & "drop biscuits" too. Goes great with some bacon.

YUM!

I always make my OWN mayo learned from my Danish mom. Using Extra Light Tasting Olive Oil and stirred by hand. There was not store brand mayo in the stores when I grew up.

Gravy: All my family, children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews brags about my gravy (Sovs) made from scratch and mostly using Coconut Oil, which BTW I also fry in. To sicken it, I don’t use flour, (probably filled with GMOs.) I use potato starch or instant potato.

I’m only 10-lbs heavier than at 16.
