For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonalds in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving.
Thats right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits Here are the Stellas for 2015 !!!!
* SEVENTH PLACE *
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own.
Start head scratching!
* SIXTH PLACE *
Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didnt notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbors hubcaps.
Scratch some more
* FIFTH PLACE *
Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldnt re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowners insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay...

Who would have thought that self infliction of pain and suffering would be ever be considered someone else’s fault.
As for Stella, I’m on the fence about her. It was proven in court that the coffee she received far exceeded the max temperature as set in the McDonalds manual. Also how many times has any of us ever ordered a drink to go and the lid was not on properly and the drink filled to the very rim.
This lady suffered horrific burns and McDonald’s ignored her request for assistance.
I don’t trust Snoopes on politics but they are probably right on this being a hoax.

These are old - I’ve seen the one about the female in Austin for at least 3 years running.
That said, the dufus in the garage DESERVED TO BE HUNGRY. No, not because he was a thief, but because he was STOOOOOPID!. Every single automatic garage door opener has a simple toggle switch to disconnect the door from the machine, and to allow you to open it manually. Besides, there was NOTHING in the garage to cut through the door? Hope he choked on the Alpo...f’ing moron.
The last one set my BS meter off. This story has floated around in some form or another since at least 1978.
Oh, I’m SURE there are those that have put drinks between their legs while driving. I’d presume more than 90% of the former were COLD though.
I still fail to see how stupidity trumps common sense in her regard, regardless of how hot HOT coffee was served.
I cannot believe that insurance companies have such inadequate legal representation that ANY of these claims would be paid.
these exact same stories have been around for years, at least since 2004. All of a sudden they are now the 2015 awards ?
and BTW...none of them are true.
For those of you spitting your coffee on the monitor and spilling your coffee on the keyboard you can sue the following: The maker of the monitor and the keyboard and the coffee and the cup and your dentist for allowing your mouth to open at an inappropriate time.
