Ping.
I didn’t know it still existed
I never did get into the John Birch Society.
I did, however, march against the Skokie Nazis in a parallel march in Cincinnati a long time ago...mid to late 70’s I think. The Hebrew Union students from across the road, the Univ Cincy students, and a few busloads of folks from I don’t know where. I had been indoctrinated by my evangelical dad to be a pro-Israel, Jew lover. :>)
In the mid-70s, when I was in Junior High School, I noticed a few things:
My favorite subject (History) became “social studies”.
My Social Studies teacher liked to focus on situational ethics which encouraged people to do bad things (steal medicine to help sick children, engage in cannibalism to avoid starvation, etc.)
My Social Studies teacher liked to rant about some mysterious thing called “The John Birch Society”. He never told us what it was, but he made it clear that it was the source of all evil in the world.
I’m not a member of the JBS and still don’t know a heck of a lot about it. But I do know that the communists hate it. So it can’t be all bad.
Had to ask my dad what they were about.
John Birch was a Christian Missionary in China prior to WWII, worked as an intel officer and spy/infiltrator for Chennault (Flying Tigers) in China during WWII, and was murdered by the communist Chinese right at the end of the war. He had NOTHING to do with the John Birch Society, except unfortunately they hijacked his name for the group.
I'm sorry it still does. It should be as extinct as the Liberty Lobby.
The thing that makes me so mad is that it wasn't this bad when socialists ran Israel. They didn't support it, but they didn't spend a lot of time attacking it either. They mostly just ignored it (it was never included in a list of Communist-run countries they published).
And now they're no different than Stormfront. Why do Jews (or anyone who claims to support the Jewish people) continue to belong to such an organization???
Use of the phrase “Israel-first” exposes one as an antisemite for sure.
Yes it can and is. It believes in a worldwide Jewish-Zionist "conspiracy."
The Communists hated the Nazis too. Does that mean they couldn't have been all bad???
Justin Gaimondo and the Ludwig von Mises Institute are on the Hate Israel list, too. The Catholic background of so many of its members is what I attribute to this position.
You're darn tootin' it does! Way back when I was stupid enough to be a member they were never that blatant about it!
I suppose it's fair to say the old JBS were Rhodesia-firsters???
There's more to it than just theology. They actually seem to regard chrstianity as a religion created by and primarily applying to people of European descent. It's as if Europeans were either the "new Israel" or the "true Israel" (with actual Jews as evil counterfeits, G-d forbid).
And there are plenty of anti-Israel Protestant "reconstructionsts" in the JBS too. In fact, the man who invented the explicitly anti-G-d, anti-Bible religion of "creativity" (Ben Klaassen, mach shemo!) came out of the Birch Society!
You see all the posts with source “New American” from thenewamerican.com? That’s the JBS.
I will try my very best not to get frustrated.
I know that's the JBS! I wrote this vanity after reading one of their articles which is actually linked above.
But you're right; a lot of FReepers have no idea who and what they're supporting when they look to TNA as some sort of conservative beacon.
I always laugh when I hear someone say the Jews run the world. I always retort with,”I guess that’s why they’ve had their tit in a wringer for the last 60 years over in Israel.” That usually shuts them up. Are there Jews involved in nefarious enterprises? Sure. But to think that they are the monster hiding behind every shadow is ridiculous.
You’re describing so-called replacement theology. That’s the heresy that won’t die, at least yet.
Same here.
First of all, "replacement theology" is not heresy. It's traditional chrstian doctrine and always has been. Only the most Biblicist of Fundamentalist Protestants reject it.
Secondly, it's not simply the idea that the church has superseded Israel (G-d forbid!). It's the identification of chrstianity with a specific ethno-culture, ie, Europe, and the treating of Europe and Europeans as a sort of "chosen nation" of chrstendom. As the notorious Hilaire Belloc put it, "Europe is the faith and the faith is Europe!"
But it's not just Catholics who think that way.
Claiming “replacement” means no understanding of the new covenant, with all due respect. Consider that the first apostles mentioned were Jews for starters. FWIU, it’s an opening of the covenant to the other nations, not shutting out Judah or Israel; some may claim that Acts 18:6 is an affirmation of the doctrine, but it is not when Romans 1:16 is considered.
