This is a cautionary tale of how New Yorks Republican Party committed suicide rather than win with votes from, those people. It happened in 1994 and life has gotten worse for New York Republicans ever since.
Republican Dennis Vacco was locked in a very close battle to become the states Attorney General. During the closing days of the race Vaccos campaign manager announced that the Democrat, Karen Burstein was unqualified because she is a lesbian. The New York Times called the comment gutter politics. Nevertheless, Vacco won by just fewer than 2% and the seeds of the NY State GOPs ultimate destruction were sown.
Vacco became so full of himself he decided that a 1.90% margin was comfortable enough for him to reject the Right To Life Partys votes when he stood for re-election in 1998. Vacco was running against Democrat Eliot Spitzer who was highly motivated and illegally spending tons of his fathers money to win. Realizing that Spitzer was someone who had to be stopped, the Right To Life Party offered its line to Vacco. New York uses aggregate vote counting so the RTL line was very important.
In spite of his razor thin victory in 1994, Vacco thought he could be a hero among the country club Republicans...

DT is the ultimate country club Republican. Certainly among the richest.
He not belongs to country clubs...He owns them!
I have come to the conclusion that Trump will win the nomination IF the GOPe does not screw him out of it.
I have also come to the conclusion that they WILL screw him out of the nomination.
Therefore, IMO, Trump should go third party NOW unless he can secure a promise that no shenanigans will be pulled by the GOPe. The promise must go into great detail to ferret out every sneaky way that delegates can be denied to Trump.
In return Trump could then pledge to forego a third party run if he loses the nomination fairly.
If the GOPe will not make such a promise then Trump needs to run third party.... they are going to find a way to screw him IMO so the only choice is third party.
If they refuse to promise fairness in all matters related to the nomination then their agenda will be clear for all to see.
Virginia 2013 was the archetypical example. Would have had statewide GOP sweep but for the defection of a few key GOP-e power brokers. Ended up a Dem sweep instead.
That’s right Bill Bolling, lookin’ at you.
I’m starting to agree with you. GOPe doesn’t want Trump voters anyway, so why give it to them. They would probably rather lose without Trump than win with him. Think Romney and McCain.
First question of the next “debate” should be, “Let me see a show of hands if you will not support Donald Trump, should he be the Republican nominee.”
If the candidates are honest, my guess is there will be 7-8 hands go up.
But wait, they are politicians. Lying is one of the major qualifications for that career.
Governor Corbett said he would sign it if passed. George Will wailed that it was unfair and got together with Rob Gleason, our GOPe chairman, to make sure it never made it out of committee.
yep...him and a bunch of others, such as the so called Republican mayor of VA Beach, Will Sessoms, who actually endorsed and made commercials for the rat ticket.
No, No, NO. They want our votes, our donations and their campaign signs in our yards. They just want us to sit down and shut up until the next election. Then they'll be back with their hands out begging for our cash and votes while they tell us what great conservatives they are...again.
This premise is not untrue.
Ask yourself how does John Boehner’s life change if we don’t win the Presidency next year? How will Mitch McConnell’s life change? Or Paul Ryan or Kevin McCarthy or any of the Congressional leadership? The answer is it won’t change for them at all. They will still have their cushy jobs, status, power and cronies.
Make it Trump/Cruz 2016, or get ready for another 8 years of dummycrats.
The GOPe are embarrassed by conservatives and would much rather run “centrists” who are only a little to the right of the DemocRats.
The Gopes making these pronouncements are not in danger of losing their jobs so they can be imperious and wave off the rabble. They are old time classic English Tories. Will even said that is what he is at one point some years ago, I think, in an exchange with Buckley. Buckley made the point and Will agreed.
George Will thinks he is an intellectual. He uses long words and talks slowly with lots and lots of gravitas. He is often wrong, but damn, he has gravitas.
Follow the money. If big money GOP can’t buy trump, they can’t buy favors. Democrats and republicans both have made huge fortunes for themselves and special interest cronies. Hillary will continue Obama policies thus enriching the GOP establishment. They could care less about the health of the nation and we little people.
My theory is still Trump acting as the bulldozer for Cruz. Which is a good thing in my opinion. Carson will be the attack dog for the disastrous Obamacare, Trump will be the attack dog for immigration, and Cruz will clean up for the nomination.
“My theory is still Trump acting as the bulldozer for Cruz. Which is a good thing in my opinion. Carson will be the attack dog for the disastrous Obamacare, Trump will be the attack dog for immigration, and Cruz will clean up for the nomination.”
Your theory is fueled by meth. Donald Trump is a bulldozer for Donald Trump. If he does not stray into the weeds on an unforced error he is well on the way to securing the GOP nomination. Who is going to stop him? Bush, Walker, Carson, Fiorina, Huck? Give me a break.
Ted Cruz good guy that he is has never been able to get traction past about 8%. Not a good sign. He is running a smart campaign though. Angling to either pick up Trump voters if Trump self destructs or hopefully securing the number spot on the Trump ticket which would not be the worst thing in the world.

Exactly right!
In the 1990 gubernatorial election in NY, the Republicans APPOINTED one Pierre Rinfret to run. He was so left he didn’t even get the conseravtive line, much less Right to Life.
Rinfret was so crazy pro-abort that he CAMPAIGNED at abortion mills.
This is the legacy of Rockefeller Republicanism.
