Protesters have taken it upon themselves to lecture Japanese people about "cultural appropriation" of Japanese culture by whites.
The bizarre interaction took place at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The museum has been holding an exhibit encouraging visitors to wear a kimono to celebrate Claude Monets painting La Japonaise.
The largely non-Japanese protesters decided that this exhibit was a form of "cultural appropriation" of Japanese culture. They have been protesting the event for weeks, calling the museum "white supremacist" and "racist."
Now, a counter-protest which includes Japanese women are taking the "cultural appropriation" protesters to task.
The counter-protesters include mostly older Japanese women. They held signs that read, "I am not offended by people wearing kimono in front of French paintings" and "I welcome museum exhibits that share Japanese culture with the community."
Etsuko Yashiro and Ikuko Burns expressed disappointment in the protests, suggesting that youthful ignorance was the reason behind the "cultural appropriation" protests. "Im a little bit disappointed by the other side," Ms. Burns said.
Loreto Ansaldo, a Chilean woman who is protesting "cultural appropriation," said there is a misunderstanding between her and Japanese women. "This is part of the misunderstanding: We never said people who arent Japanese cant wear a kimono," she said.
Jiro Usui, the Deputy Consul General of Japan in Boston, disagreed, saying, We actually do not quite understand what their point of protest is. We tried to listen to those people who are protesting, but we think together with the MFA we should encourage that Japanese culture be appreciated in a positive way.
“This is part of the misunderstanding: We never said people who arent Japanese cant wear a kimono,” she said.
Well, I suggest this be part of the UNderstanding: Nobody gives the slightest crap what you say. Clear?
Go to Tokyo or Beijing, and you’ll find millions of people attired in Western garb. Are they, too, guilty of cultural appropriation?
Such nonsense.
Liberals need to be caged.
If because of that these protestors believe that I'm somehow guilty of "cultural appropriation", then I demand that Obama switches out his fancy tailored suits for a grass skirt and a giraffe-hunting spear.
Boston has many universities filled with
students who have WAY too much time on
their hands.
Ping.
Let me go further, it is an insult to anyone, whom the White guilt-ridden egalitarian embraces as an object for their offensive patronization. The only actual "White privilege," evident here, is to be spared this offensive patronization. While the patronization is an insult, to be demonized by these looneys is rather a compliment.
In a sane world “Cultural Appropriation” would be a good thing, an acknowledgement of the quality and value of the culture and the customs or items “appropriated.”
LOL, no, you totalitarian maniac, the misunderstanding is that you should have any say whatsoever in what anyone wears at all.
I was just in Japan. At many of the tourist spots, there were people always dressed in kimonos, male and female, from Japan and Hong Kong and elsewhere. They loved it.
I cannot fathom these protesters.
LOL, me too!
If I wasn't at Work I could post so many relevant Pics, Links and Gifs.
Compare this to what happened in the 15th century when China isolated itself from the rest of the world. Same people, same culture, but without access to outside innovation, China was quickly left behind.
Seems like the folks complaining either dont know that cultural cross-pollination is a good thing, or they are purposely hoping for a decline in American culture. My money is on it being a little of both.
And...
After you have a culture that thrives on being victimized, what is the NEXT sordid step?
A culture that thrives on being offended ON BEHALF OF OTHERS, who do NOT feel offended.
AKA normal people.
The fun of being the ONLY insane person soon wears off, then you have to get OTHER to be similarly insane.
Then THAT wears off and you have to make EVERYONE insane —you can’t rest until you do.
It’s like some sordid JUNKIE, always looking for that higher high.
Left there.
