I got that....I have exactly the same issues with Apple.

But to continue defense of the auto-update issue, Windows for some time has had their own anti virus application. They have to have the auto updater turned on to update the virus data base as well as the associated program.

Also they want those security updates loaded.

It seems to me that they really had little choice but to take away the option of turning it off.

I don’t have any issues with that. Some of the enterprise users may but the version they will likely have, does have a delayed update provision.

They're too big of a target for I.D.Hackers and other security risk, mostly due to size of market share.
When they lost me, I was having issues with a recent security update and my computer locked up with the fatal blue screen.
After talking over the phone with microsft, somewhere in India I think, they wanted about $40.00 to talk through the repair.
Long story short, they got me through it, but on the next update, I had the same problem, and again they wanted more money to talk me through the repair.
I slammed the phone down and went to the BX and did a little research.
Within a week I had my I-Mac.
A local repair shop sold me on an external USB case for my old hard drive (NexStar SX), and a copy of Parallels.
That gave me access to my data, and I haven't regretted that move at all.
That was several years ago, and I've only had one problem with an Operating System's Update.
Apple talked me through it with easy and didn't want any money to do it.
I still occasionally use MS Office, but more and more I use "Pages" and "I-Works".
My only real administrative computer needs since I retired is usually around tax time.
So, I'm satisfied.
