Barbarians at the Gate WI: Owner Defends Store and Self with AR 15 clone (Video)

On July 3rd, 2015, Ronnie Murrar grabbed a sport utility rifle when it counted.  It was a good choice.   Three robbers smashed through a concrete barrier and into the gates of his store with a stolen mini-van.  Ronnie accessed an AR 15 pattern rifle and fired at the invaders as they attempted to squeeze through the damaged gates.  At seconds 54-57, he fires about 7 shots.

Deishun L. Byrd-McWay has been charged in the incident.  He showed up at the hospital with three gunshot wounds.  Three hits in three seconds out of seven shots at about 20 yards is pretty good.   In the video, Ronnie does not appear to be using the sights, but does have the rifle at his shoulder, using a variation of a point shooting technique.

The video illustrates many of the virtues of the AR 15 type rifle for defense of self and others. It is easy to use, points naturally, is easy to control with mild recoil, and has sufficient magazine capacity that you do not have to worry about a reload or attempt to count your shots in a tense, life and death situation.

After the perpetrators flee, Ronnie puts down the rifle and grabs his pistol to investigate the damage to the door.   A pistol allows a person to be armed without having a gun in their hand when the police arrive.

 From wisn.com on 23 July:

The owner of the store found out Wednesday he won't be charged in the shooting.

The attorney for Bouchard's owner told WISN 12 News reporter Christina Palladino his client had every right to defend himself after three men with guns broke into his store.

"The persons who tried to break into his store that night not only intended to steal but intended to kill him,” attorney John Schiro said.He said the video clearly illustrates how the men rammed the back of a stolen minivan into concrete posts blocking the entrance. Then, the men jumped out and tried to squeeze through the opening of the gate.

I wonder if my good friend, Jim Blair, of Blair's hardware, sold Ronnie the rifle.  Jim gained momentary national attention during the run up to the Clinton "Assault Weapon" ban when he defended the Second Amendment on TV in the Milwaukee area.  He sold dozens of rifles and cases of ammunition out of the Blair Hardware family store in Butler, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee.

It is activism such as Jim's that has helped to educate citizens to the virtues of sport utility rifles for defense of self and others.

Jim is a superb shot with rifle and pistol, competing in high power rifle events at Camp Perry.

I presume an AR-15 clone is rimfire/.22 cal.

Not nearly deadly enough for protection...unless you empty the magazine into a perp.

No, it was probably a .223 or 5.56x45, the most common chambering for a AR15 clone.

The term AR15 clone is used because it covers the many different manufacturers and models that are made on the basic AR15 type of platform.

It has not been stated where Deishun L. Byrd-McWay was hit. There were likely peripheral hits, as he survived.

I have an AR, and it certainly isn’t a clone.

Usually the term clone is used to describe an AR-15 style of weapon which is chambered in something other than and smaller than a 5.56.

I have seen 9mm, .22 cal, and even BB firing AR's.

I just watched the video, and, from the muzzle flash, looks like you’re are correct about this guy firing a .223/5.56.

H/T to our FRiend marktwain for the post.

And also take note of yefragetuwrabrumuy's VERY astute analysis at Post #10.

This has gone viral as of this morning, and of course the Left is casting blame for the whole thing on the conduct of the storekeeper...

We have a county DA who is dragging a good shooting by local city police in front of a *civil* grand jury *3 years* after the incident. Complete B.S. driven by the current political environment.

If you need to put some heat on this guy you need to get people discussing the fact this guy thinks your city has money to burn oin this case. and if it turns out hes getting fed money to go ahead with it, expose that angle too.

It’s a county prosecutor going after a city policeman, so two levels of government involved. And to add more fun to the equation, there’s a racial component.

I've built some 300 AAC Blackout clones. Avoid the 7.62x39 builds. You need a curved mag for that cartridge. Feeding from a straight one will mill the bolt face. The 300 BLK is cut down .223 Rem brass necked to 30 cal. A great round for hog hunting. Great suppressed (subsonic) with a can too. Hornady Varmageddon 110 gr feeds nicely in an M4 and produces 2200 to 2500 fps. The subsonic stuff is typically 220 gr at 1050 fps. You need pistol or carbine length gas ports as the amount of powder is limited. Subsonics often need the can attached for enough back pressure to cycle properly. If you reload, you want spire point bullets. Round nose like the Speer Plinker will snag in the M4 feed ramp. No problem for a bolt action like the Ruger American Ranch in 300 BLK.

Yes, clone. Take your pick. So which isn't considered a clone, 5.56?
or something other than chambering.

Good question. I didn't start the clone thing I just responded to a post that seemed to want to know what calibers AR’s can come in. Around here we just say AR in XXX.

“Boris Roscoevitch”, why not call it: “boris mikhailovitch”?

mikhailovitch, because mikhail kalishnokov designed the rifle, ergo, ‘son of’. ‘ovna’ is daughter of.

Soviet industrial designer and Lieutenant-General Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was known by his friends and close associates by the combined familiar name MikTim from the dimunitive nickname from his first name conjoined with his patronymic, Timofeyevich.

There was a post at Free Republic about it a couple of years back.

Concur. Although some interesting things can be done with a belt-fed AR upper ejecting downward through an otherwise unused magazine well, and the 7,62x39mm M43 cartridge offers a little better penetration than the 5,56x45.

I've now pretty much quit playing with .300 Blackout, and have moved on to the 7,62x40mm WT.

The 7.62x40 WT is based on the inexpensive and readily available 5.56x45 Nato cartridge case. The 5.56 case is shortened to 1.560” and then re-sized (single operation) in a standard 7.62x40 WT sizing die which results in a formed 7.62x40 WT case with a finished overall case length of 1.565”. The cartridge is designed for 110-150gr .308” diameter bullets loaded to supersonic velocities, but if chambered in a 1-8 twist barrel is also suitable for heavy bullet subsonic use also. Click here to download the Cartridge Case Spec Sheet.
