You mean they didn’t appreciate the dead roadkill deer, skunk, groundhog and my neighbor’s dead cats in the food compost. Heck, we composted cows and horses on the farm.... it all degrades!
While we used the outhouse and moved it every couple of years to a new pit, we had neighbors that were lazy so they would just place a toilet seat over a trash can with a bag in it. They would use it for a while and send it out with the trash.
