Same-sex marriage impossible in Philippines – Belmonte

MANILA, Philippines - Same-sex marriage is impossible to be legalized in the country, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said yesterday.

“From the point of view of our culture, it’s an impossibility for quite some time,” he told reporters.

He said he does not see Congress approving a bill allowing same sex marriage because it is against the Filipinos’ culture.

“The law lives within the culture and not the other way around,” he said.

In the same breath, Belmonte said he does not see efforts to have Congress pass a divorce bill succeeding.

“I don’t think we are going into something like that anytime soon,” he added.

He pointed out that despite the absence of a divorce law, couples with irreconcilable differences could avail themselves of legal separation or annulment of marriage.

“The rules on annulment have been eased. That’s why there are many couples applying for annulment of marriage,” he added.

While he is not in favor of same-sex marriage, Belmonte stressed that he is “100 percent against discrimination on the basis of gender.”

He said he hoped the House could pass a bill prohibiting such kind of discrimination.

‘Philippines won’t follow move’

Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III expressed doubt that the Philippines will follow the move of the US Supreme Court that allowed same sex marriage in all of its 50 states.

Pimentel said policy-makers would fear the backlash of the Catholic Church, a big influence over state affairs in the country.

He said same sex marriage may not even be constitutional under Philippine laws.

Unlike in the laws covering abortion and reproductive health, Pimentel pointed out that there is no law yet on same-sex marriage in the country.

“We cannot always imitate what they do in America in terms of the law because they have different legal minds. They have a different Constitution compared to ours. We have our laws on abortion, for example,” Pimentel said.

“I think it’s impossible for us now,” he said.

“The Catholic Church has a strong influence on our moral sense of right or wrong, which is in our laws. Our laws have Catholic influence, which will be a big opposition on same-sex marriage.”

Same-sex marriage is still “out of the radar” of the Philippines, Pimentel said.

Well, I certainly wish you all the luck in the world on that, Mr. Belmonte.

Well, AF-1 should be heading that way in the near future, so that Obozo can give them a good scolding,.....and then hit this nearest golf course.

Good. Keep it "impossible". Continue to be the strong people you have been, even back when Japan was killing you.

That said, with China growing and threatening, bet a lot of you wish we were still stationed in Subic Bay and Clark Air Force Base. Some of the most hard-working sailors in my early years were Filipino, not to mention just being good friends.

But then, maybe I'm jaded by all the clubs along Magsaysay and the beautiful hostesses there. Sometimes wonder what happened to them when the Philippines kicked us out. Big mistake as they're now learning.

The Filipinos have a totally different mind set than Americans. They are not into PC.

Do you really think that Mr. Obama would allow the military to defend the Philippines from China?

Six Roman Catholics on the SCOTUS. If the US church or the Vatican had b****, they would excommunicate any of the weasels who voted with the homo majority — Kennedy and Sotomayor(?) Same should apply to any RC member of the House or Senate who support sexual perversion, abortion, euthanasia, or assisted suicide. And the POTUS, if in the future he is a weasel RC.

Of course not. Did I imply such above? Obama will not defend any of our Allies if push came to shove. We can talk about all the reasons he is an appeaser all day, but bottom line, he is a pussy and the World knows it. Obambi has unilaterally reversed the respect and strength of American policy around the World. NO ONE trusts him, but Iran is more than happy to work with that. Pfft!

You were told correctly. If they can't make it together, usually, they just separate. If they can scrape together some cash, they might be able to get an annulment.

Russia and the Third World and the generations to come view and will view Western Decadence with disgust.

One of its most appalling perversions is the inability of Western Decadents to see its excesses for what they are.

America wasn't into PC either, 50 years ago.
