This looks like a situation where the overworked high wage worker will not have the time to enjoy the money they are making. That luxury they will have to postpone to their retirement years; if their health will be up for it.

Work is good and necessary but if becomes an all-consuming out of balance ‘god or idol’ then its a form of slavery.

I had a high-hours job at one point. I worked the hours, accumulated enough cash to pay for a down payment on my house, then had a regular 35 hour/week job.

It’s something to do for a while when you’re young, but not for your whole life.

A lot of companies use a “churn and burn” methodology with their employees treating them as throwaway commodities. To survive many employees cheat trying to stay ahead of the game

There's ALWAYS a trade-off for (more) money

No one ever counseled me, but waayyy back when .... I evolved into a pretty satisfied guy with just a paycheck and I adopted my lifestyle TO it.

When a five dollar an hour car was sufficient, a five dollar an hour job sufficed

When family demanded a ten dollar an hour car, I got a ten dollar an hour job

(BTW ... a five dollar an hour job also provides for (only) a five dollar an hour wife .. etc.)

I'm retired now and my SS is sufficient for US as we are programmed to BE that way .... by choice

Remember ... it is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil .... not the money itself.

Instead of working longer hours for a company I would be dependent on, and beholden to, I developed a sideline.

I bought fixer-upper houses, improved them, and rented them out. The rental real estate sideline allowed me to be much more independent at my day job, which made me more valued and higher-paid.

When I retired early, the I sold the rentals and did a tax-deferred exchange into properties in our new town.

I worked the long hours, but built a business that I owned and that is our cushion against inflation in retirement. Plus, I can pass it to our children as an inheritance.

It's not just the higher paying tech jobs that are doing this. I work at least a few minutes every day of the week. I don't even have to log in at times, I can just check my emails on my phone. But I start early in the morning by logging in after I wake up, log in from the train, and often log in when I get home. I am currently out of town on paid time off, but will still be working some each day. If I don't like it, I can find another company that will demand the same, or let an outsourcing outfit sweet-talk my company into outsourcing my job (which has happened already to some in my company).

It's about defending your job by doing a far better job than those who want to take it. It is the reality of modern technology that you are expected to be able to work anytime, anywhere and the world does not care about your schedule.

But, what about all the crocodile tears for the "working man"?
The "working man" or "middle class" worker puts in 30-40 and goes home. The REAL "working man" puts in 60-100 each week and is payed for 40. He gets little time off, even when at home.
