Yes it was. Unequivocally the US of 1860 was an extremely racist place.
I’ve been to Africa and seen real racism and tribalism. My interpreter would tell me as we passed through villages that “those people” use to be his ancestors slaves.
There isn’t one African who wouldn’t give their right arm to come to America.
