A diesel locomotive is nothing more than a huge generator on wheels. Very easy to set up a small emergency buss in small to medium sized cities.

For port cities, Nuke powered Navy ships can supply even more power.

Not everything will grind to a halt, but kiss facebook goodby (and that is a good thing!)

Is there anything on the web about such mini reactor’s? Never heard of it before. Interesting.

The Army is already hardening its equipment against EMP’s. NORAD has recently moved all its communication gear back to the Nuclear Base under the Cheyenne Mountain (EMP hardened). They try to do things but they are slow!

That won’t happen for at least another two years. This president seems intent on weakening America, so I doubt that he’ll do anything to actually strengthen us.

Ya might want to add Emergency Cooling Systems for big Nuke Plants to avoid a Fukushima Daiichi replay to Your list.

Agreed, but we don’t have that kind of government.

My understanding is that an EMP cannot injure the physical structure of a device that is not on line at the moment of an emp. For example, a car sitting in a driveway not turned on will function after the EMP, but one running at the time will have its circuits fried.

Is that correct?

Hardening the grid against an EMP attack

A few weeks ago we had a speaker from the local power company at the Engineers Club. I raised the issue of EMP, both from a nuclear explosion and solar-induced Carrington event. He assured me that the power lines are being hardened against EMP. I hope he wasn't just blowing smoke.
