Bad Strategy #1: “I’ll just hunt and live off the land.”
Bad Strategy #2: “I’ll go into the woods and live there.”
Bad Strategy #3: “I’ll bug out on foot for 73 miles through the mountains, even though I don’t regularly exercise.”
Bad Strategy #4: “I don’t need a group. I’m going to go it alone.”
Bad Strategy #5: “I don’t need to store food, I’ll just take everyone else’s because I’m a bad-ass.”
Bad Strategy #5: “I don’t need to store food, I’ll just take everyone else’s because I’m a bad-ass.”
Bad Strategy #7: “I don’t store food. I store seeds.”
Bad Strategy #8: “I’ll just run a generator and continue on like nothing ever happened.”
Bad Strategy #9: “I’ll just use my fireplace for cooking and heating.”
Bad Strategy #10: “I’m going to hunker down in the city and scavenge what I need.”
Bad Strategy #11: “I’ve got my supplies, and now I don’t need to think about gloom and doom.”
Bad Strategy #12: We’ll set up a perimeter and shoot anyone who breaches it.

There’s a recent news article how the military is re-opening their under mountain command center because they see a real possibility of Iran delivering an EMP.

I guess they know about Obama’s negotiating skills.

And by the way, the deer will be gone after 5 weeks. Your protein sources will be birds, ground animals, rabbits squirrels and fish. So prepare accordingly.

Not if you was on the top of list of things to do if SHTF. Its called preemptive strike. I will let you decide if I am joking or not.

Late to the party, but figured I'd actually post #6 anyway.

Bad Strategy #6: “I have lots of weapons and tools. I’ve never used them. But I have them.”

Yes in all likehood its just talk, but during SHTF will you put you and your family a risk on the chance it is just talk?

I usually counter with "Fine, you can have all the jars of food that didn't process correctly." That tends to shut them up real quick!

I have to wonder how many actually have the skill sets to live like it was the mid 1800s? And have actually practised being a mountain man over years?

Working on it. One new skill at a time :)

That’s a good point; and it supports #4. An individual is unlikely to have the required skill set — but, with a group, you expand on that skill set; and you can have division of labour. Each member of the group only needs to have or acquire a fraction of the total required skills.

I think you’re missing the point.
In a SHTF situation, “they” counter your clever riposte with:
“I wasn’t asking. I’ll take all you’ve got, and leave you your life.”

Not to mention the fact that it takes a LOT OF CROPS to come up with the 2,000 calories per day that a person needs. Try doing the math sometime.

I did the math once. I'd have to dig out my spreadsheets to check, but if I remember right it was around 1500 square feet per person, assuming the soil was decent. Although, that was for a very specific list of crops, calculated for maximum nutrition. Most people don't eat like that.

Oh, I got the point. In a SHTF situation, I wouldn’t bother with banter. They’d think they got everything, but they’d only find what was there for them to find.

And then they would die thinking they won.

But the “clever reposte” as you call it has made several people rethink their strategy. And that, after all, was MY point.

for the record, my crank radio which I rarely use works well and I've had it at least 15 yrs....lol....

I want to be right with God but I'm only human...I don't have it in me to be a happy martyr...nor do I want to watch my family be martyrs....

I want to rage against the machine and all that....

I do think people who think they'll do everything for themselves are fool hearty....best security is to form solid groups of like minded people, devoted for the survival of the group....

people will have to raise their own chickens, both for eggs and meat, or their own pigs, cows etc...where they'll get the feed I don't know....so many questions....

but its clear that even with a million deer running around they will not last...

I have to wonder how many actually have the skill sets to live like it was the mid 1800s?

The number that is always bandied about as the death toll from a large scale catastrophe like a nationwide EMP event is 90% dead within one year.

I have read people say that there is supposedly a government study to this effect but I don't recall ever seeing it myself.

But to me that number sounds plausible. There's just not much food in the pipeline for a population of over 300 million people. And if the planting, harvesting and distribution of food stuffs breaks down the food in the pipeline is pretty much all there will ever be other than locally produced food.

And even for those who know how to garden and farm, if they (we) don't already have crops in the ground when the SHTF it will take months before the first crops start to produce.

And there aren't that many people with the skills and experience to produce enough food to support themselves, let alone a group or community. Especially when everything will have to be done by hand.

There are two of us and with my preps for 2+ and my medical training/equipment and his ingenuity to fix equipment that screws up, plus his firearm natural skill and training, we are as prepared as we can be. No one knows what may happen but we'll roll with the way it is, whatever that may be, and adjust as necessary.

He actually said he could live in the woods. That's “Bad Strategy 2”, but he's one who could do it if anyone could, except for you, Johnny, we know you can do it because you have.

When the SHTF, I’ll be sunk. I’m 72, sort of disabled and a city boy through and through. I have about 12 prescription meds I have to take daily. I have a couple of handguns and maybe 500 rounds. My wife hates guns and I’m hoping she’ll change her mind when the bad guys are on the wire. We live in a gated retirement community. Some of my fellow gym rats could be counted on. There are a lot of vets but it’s been like 50+ years. Let’s hope FLNG can keep us safe.
