This graphic shows the 10 largest state-to-state migration flows in and out of California for the period 1955-1960 compared to that of 1995-2000. In the late 1950s, the largest flows involving California were all inflows to the state, generally from states in the Midwest or Northeast. This pattern contrasted with the flows in the late 1990s, where nearly all of the largest migration streams involving California represented out-migration to other states.
Well to my mind conservative means the sorts of policies with a solid track record and which would qualify as “best practices” in a rubber meeting the road learning from history and experience kind of way. Hippies who want to inflict untested utopian ideas do not qualify as anything resembling conservative.
This runs a lot deeper of course, the crux of the matter seems to be a vision of the future. On one side you have globalist rent-seekers with a Pollyanna view of human nature, kumbaya... on the other side is a recognition that grandiose b.s. like this doesn’t work, and that there is no neat theory to explain what does work (and in any event we aren’t going to stand still while someone inflicts misbegotten nonsense on us).
Conservative is not new and improved. Conservative is the guy with a meticulously maintained and deeply boring looking decades old car. Not very Cali to say the least.
You are dead wrong.
50s, 60s, 70s liberals from New England and NY and the rust belt fled to California and destroyed it.
Your cherry picked example that Reagan won the Northeast in 1984 is completely disingenuous. Reagan won 1984 in a landslide. That is not representative of the entirety of the 60s and 70s for example, which we are talking about. You have to consider the contended elections, not the landslides like 1964 or 1972.
In 1968 when most the entire nation voted for Nixon, the North East was for Humphrey. California was still Republican then.
In 1976, even on the heels of Impeachment resignation, California and the entire west voted for Ford, while the North East went for Carter.
California was ruined by white liberal migration from the north east and the rust belt. Plain and simple.
Expatriate Californians have ruined Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado. It is a genuine shame.
How California is turning the rest of the west blue
My mistake, post got edited improperly.
Sorry if I caused any distress.
My memory is failing but I believe I was responding to both you & Ifinn.
No!
From way back when...rumours abounded that OR & WA were ALWAYS the green freaks that we in CA didn’t want anything to do with...
As a child I do remember quite a few ‘new’ kids from WA in school & on my block, not quite so many from OR. But I do remember the adults speaking negatively about OR, except for the no tax on car sales.
Oregon was always more liberal than Washington. Neither were out and out liberal states.
From 1940 to 1985, Washington has had 7 Governors — 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats.
Since 1984, EVERY SINGLE GOVERNOR has been a Democrat.
From 1940 to 1980, Oregon has had 10 Governers — 8 Republican and 2 Democrat.
Since 1980, EVERY SINGLE GOVERNOR of Oregon has been a Democrat.
This is how California ruined both Washington and Oregon. I agree neither was a conservative bastion before, but they were balanced, even if Oregon was always a little nutty.
Your link is from NPR of all places. NPR offers no evidence that shows California natives moving to other western states are causing those western states to turn blue.
They are covering up what's really happening. And you are falling for it.
It's immigration from south of the border and other places that is causing states to turn blue.
You are in denial.
Does it have to be "either/or" rather that "both/and"?
Nevada might have gone Democrat probably because of Latino workers in Las Vegas, but when it comes to ski resorts in Idaho or Colorado, it's not likely that it was the Mexicans that turned them Democrat.
White Californians still vote a majority Republican even today. So it's reasonable to conclude that the white migration from the East and Mid-West in and of itself didn't cause California's present day domination by the socialist DemocRat party.
All one has to do is look at the demographics and look due south to see why California tipped to being hopelessly Rat.
Oops. Addressing Californians migrating to other western states (which is what you were doing) I think the same point applies as in my first post to you.
I’m a life long conservative that just happened to be born in California.
I relocated to Texas 5 years ago, to save my job.
I live in one of the most conservative counties, and am happy to be here.
That law you mentioned should only apply to liberals.
My grandson from Michigan moved to California, in California they are considered conservative, but up here in michigan we detect a dash of liberal, not a lot but leaning at times liberal.....all things are relative......still love him much...:O).
I think you’re onto something there, and good luck to your grandson in the land of fruit and nuts ;)
It was.
