I have found it invaluable to have access to multiple viewpoints and find ways of keeping dialogs civil and productive when possible.
It's not always possible. I already had to defriend a few people, recently, my wife's nephew, who was raised by his mother and her "significant other" if you get my drift (it is what it is) because he didn't like my opposition to prosecuting bakery shop owners who refuse to cater to gay weddings on personal and/or religious grounds. So he left a mindless diatribe about how great Hilary is and those effing Teabaggers and Sarah Palin is a whore and blah blah blah, then blocked my wife, daughter and I from his account. Yeah, this is precisely how they roll.
