Yep, it is time to start eating those, some of the candy will be a little mushy.

“Yesterday I used my last can of tomato sauce with a “best by” date of 3/1 2010, but I think my oldest canned meats are “best by” 2003. I’m currently trying to use up all of the older stuff and replace it with newer, and am close to having done that.”

So how is the food. I’ve had really good luck myself with expired canned food (up to 5 years old, so not too old). But I do hear the left is now going after the rubber-type material used to line cans, so future canned foods may not do too well.

With your tag line and that statement...its not much of a stretch to suggest that YOU are what has gone Wrong with our country...our society.....voluntary altruism....and free good will...and honesty....is what builds societies....When that goes away... they retract then collapse....of course there are many lesser systems...that involve Involuntary altruism....usually government sponsored....YOU must be a supporter of these?...Maybe You could do U.S. all a favor and move?
Thanks

“Rice, and other grains are frozen – vacuum sealed with oxygen to preserve it.”

Oxygen is a preservative all of a sudden?

Clear sign that the article was written by a pure, nitrogen-preserve MORON.

***Rice, and other grains are frozen – vacuum sealed with oxygen to preserve it.***

WHAT? I've always read you use CO2, or another inert gas as oxygen will make the food rancid.

Survivalism is not new. Back in the olden days just about everyone canned, dried, hung up beef and pork, chicken, ect for the coming winter.
In the 1930s anyone out of the Drought zone had good crops, so good the government bought up the cattle, hogs, milk, and destroyed it to keep prices up.
Ten years later, in WW II, the Government wanted everyone to raise Victory Gardens to take pressure off feeding the Army.

BUT, If you had a real good garden, and canned up lots of what you grew, the government could come in and confiscate everything you had canned as now YOU were a FOOD HOARDER!

In the hard times of the late 40s and 50s through the 60s we would have been called “survivalists”.

The modern version of Survivalism got started back in the ‘70s when it was realized that the USA had no plans to survive a nuclear attack from the USSR. The government relied on MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction). As a result, citizens began to take their survivalism in their own hands.

The food is fine, canned tuna and canned corn are favorites of mine for 10 and 12 year storage, but I have eaten 25 year old canned cabbage, that I probably could have served to guests without them noticing that it was old, although since I knew it was, I was aware that the coloring wasn’t as good, and that it was overly soft.

Hurricane Sandy was a good “dry run” for many of us here in NJ. Among the lessons I learned: Cell phones, even when they can be charged with cars, don’t work well when the towers have no power. Radios are only as good as their content; all we heard was how much crappier it was in other areas. Generators are great if you have a 500 gallon storage tank for fuel. Bicycles should be included with any emergency supplies. Finally, camping stuff = prepper stuff.

We were fortunate in that our power was back before the temperatures really dropped; other people weren’t so lucky.

They may soon have a new reason for this activity!

SEPTEMBER, 2016
“OK, Valerie, tell me where we are.”

“Yes sir. I’ve sent secure messages to all involved parties and they have responded that they will all be ready.”

“The mullahs in charge of the mosques and training camps, our friends in the military, our friends in the minority and black communities, the leaders of the illegal immigrants, our friends running the local armories...all of them...?

“Yes sir! They’re ready for your call.”

“Alright then. Let’s go on the next national holiday when most of those idiots in the legislature will be away or hungover or both. Tell the mothers to bring their children. If we run into any serious opposition, those kids should make them think twice before pulling a trigger.”

His assistant chuckled as she smiled back at him. “Yes sir.”

The word went out that it was to be September 4th, the day before Proletariat Appreciation Day, approximately 60 days before the next election. Polls indicated that there was almost certainly going to be a sweep of the legislature and the executive office by the radical wings of the conservative party. He had wanted to go sooner but his purge of senior officers had been slowed by the halfhearted “investigation” by the increasingly gutless legislature. He was now certain that he had all the right people in the necessary key top spots in the military.

Two of the biggest hurdles in the plan – besides the secrecy necessary to bring it off — were transporting his supporters from around the country and providing them sufficient arms.

Both problems were solved by moving General Hamad to the highest position in the army last January. He’d been busy sorting through the commanders of the largest posts in each region, either assuring that they were loyal and on board with the plan and, if not, replacing them with officers who were. Some those thought to be a threat to the plan – mainly commanders from the southern regions – had sudden fatal “accidents.

Now that those loyalists – all of whom were promised prime positions once the new regime was in power — were in place, the necessary transportation was assured by means of the hundreds of assorted over-the-road vehicle in the motor pools of each installation. And the weapons problem was a no brainer if one has unfettered access to multiple huge military installations. (Postscript: Those “loyalists” – like Hitler’s loyalist, Ernst Rohm – all died at his hand lest they challenge his reign.)

The plan was to convoy into the Capitol city from even the most distant points in the country with a coordinated ETA of 12 midnight on the appointed date. Supporters from each region were given specific areas to seize and control.

When midnight of the 4th arrived, approximately 30 million loyal supporters of Dear Leader descended on the Capitol city and quickly quelled the minor resistance by some of the law enforcement and retired/reserve military personnel. Many minority members of the DC Police Department shed their uniforms for civilian clothes and joined the outsiders as they formed a defensive perimeter around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The rabble then rounded up every member of Congress they could find in DC, summarily executed them and, if they could be found, their families.

Once it became clear that the transformational revolution had reached a new and violent level, several million citizens – mainly from the southern regions – launched well organized counterattacks, the battle was joined in Manassas just as it had been in 1861 and the NEW struggle for the soul of America was on!

Can this dreadful, nightmare scenario be avoided?

That depends on the person reading this and those with whom you choose to share it.

In the video, the survivalist says that oxygen is the enemy of food storage, so it looks like the reporter got it backwards.

I’m surprised at how the price went up on these (though they aren’t selling well); entrepreneurs tried to make some money on the prepper craze around here, but I think most people just resolved to leave the area altogether (stay with relatives elsewhere) if there weren’t clear signs “normalcy” would be restored fairly quickly. In any case, nobody has the money in this area to stock away very much; it wasn’t the time to try to separate people from their dwindling funds...

***Some real hard liners are actually hoping for it.***

I am reminded of the movie DELIVERANCE in which Burt Reynolds is the survivalist, prepared for anything, till he breaks his leg and ends up with a compound fracture.

Then he must rely totally on others.

Cool - food does deteriorate over time, but VERY SLOWLY if canned. What’s unreal is that if you try to donate food that’s past its date, they will thank you profusely and then promptly throw it out.

I stock up because I am poor, that is a major reason that prepping is just a part of my lifestyle,

When I see Dennison’s canned chili for 69 cents a can or canned pintos for 39 cents, I stock up, even though it takes all of my ready cash.

...good point....I guess after seeing Ned Beatty crawl around the woods in his undies and seeing the little inbred boy.... I can’t remember anything about the movie. Blocked it out traumatically.

I “sheltered in place” when the floods hit Colorado. 6 miles of fiber optics cut off telephone and internet. My cell phone had no coverage before the flood so it still did not work. 1200 people were flown out on helicopters. It was a good learning experience. This is a fire area also. I have a hundred of pictures of slurry bombers flying over.

Lots of have had a “dry run” but pity those that their worst experience is a traffic jam.

Some are already taking action.

“The European Union is poised to scrap compulsory “best before” labels on coffee, rice, dry pasta, hard cheeses, jams and pickles to help reduce the estimated 100 million tons of food wasted across Europe each year.
Officials of the European Commission will table proposals next month allowing national governments to extend the list of foods that do not require best-before dates, in a move which they believe will mean 15 million tons less food a year is discarded by households wrongly worried that it is no longer fit for consumption.”

Stay away from the plastic tub and foil packaging. Also, I wouldn’t trust the pull top lids as much. I’ve had several pet food pull top cans good bad even though they looked fine from the outside.

I don’t disagree with you about the visas - other than to say it’s merely a tiny rounding error in the whole jobs equation.

The systemic taxes, regulations, entrenched unions and cronyism are much more powerful factors.
