Not only the Clintons but also the Nixons retired @ New York (Nixons originally in nearby NJ, but eventually NYC).

NY is a major travel hub to all the other major travel hubs, i.e., sources of income. It’s easier to fly in and out of than Honolulu.

I don’t know how former POTUS/FLOTUSes travel. They no longer have AF1 but it’s not likely they travel commercial, either.
