Jim Boggess says everyone should be proud of who they are. His sign celebrating his own White History Month has gotten quite a bit of attention.
A Flemington business owner's attempt to celebrate his white heritage has caught the attention - and ire - of several of his neighbors, the Hunterdon County Democrat reports.
Jim Boggess, proprietor of Jimbo's Deli on Main, displays a sign in the window of the 22 Main St. establishment that reads "CELEBRATE YOUR WHITE HERITAGE IN MARCH, WHITE HISTORY MONTH," the Democrat reports on nj.com.
Boggess said other groups have their celebrations, and any racial discrimination is by people who object to his sign because he's white.
"I just want to be included. Why is this such a big deal? I just don't get it," Boggess told the Democrat.
The sign caught the attention of neighbor and former customer Bhakti Curtis on March 3, who told Boggess the sign offended him. He then filed a complaint with Flemington police, according to the report.
Curtis told police the sign is "racist" and that he felt harassed by it, Cpl. Louis Hribik wrote in his report, according to the Democrat.
The corporal went to the deli, looked at the sign and spoke with Boggess. He determined the sign wasn't racist and didn't require any further police action, the Democrat reports.
Curtis, who is part white, didn't agree.
"A business can't go putting racist signs in the window, because everybody has a right to go in that store," Curtis told the Democrat. "Everybody! And have a right to buy something from that man and not feel demoralized or degraded."
Boggess told the Democrat people have been photographing the sign and giving him a thumbs up, but someone from the Business Improvement District asked him to remove it. He keeps a copy of the Bill of Rights in the deli for reference, according to the report.
Main Street Bagel Co. owner John Puckett is among those who are critical of the sign. He told the Democrat it's an embarrassment to Flemington and "makes us look like a town full of inbreds."
Boggess plans to leave the sign up for as long as he can, according to the report, but he's "getting a lot of pressure."

Oh and the Democrat is the county local weekly paper... Hunterdon County is still mostly Republican... but I see that a-hole Leonard Lance was one of the 75 amnesty traitors.
Photoshop, anyone?
Hey! We crackers are almost a minority! We’re just trying to get a jump on 2020 when the commie ‘RATS bring in so many foreign freeloaders that it becomes official.
Whites must NEVER be allowed to be proud of themselves!!
I would tell Bakhti that I would gladly take down the sign if he could tell me in a logically convincing and non-emotional way what exactly is racist about the sign.
“Curtis told police the sign is “racist” and that he felt harassed by it, Cpl. Louis Hribik wrote in his report, according to the Democrat. The corporal went to the deli, looked at the sign and spoke with Boggess....”
Only in a third world state (you have to hunt to find it - NJ) would a policeman waste his time investigating a nonsense complaint like this.
I would rather have white history month in May.
Liberals are making anything white racist. You buy white bread over wheat then you’re a racist. A white woman having a white baby is racist. You sing about a white Christmas, you’re a racist .... and on and on and on ....
Hahah, good for him.
Hey, I remember that Flemingon too. All those farms, and the 4h fair.
And my dad driving us there to the fur factory to get my mom a mink coat for her 40th birthday back in the days where women still wanted to buy fur
Then he treated us to ice cream soda at Peachys.
State?
New Jersey.
Lived in Flemington 30 years and have never been in Jimbo’s but I’ll go now. There is an awful lot of white history around here. Just celebrated the 300th anniversary of the founding of Hunterdon County for which Flemington is the county seat.
This is where the PC movement has brought us. Mr. Bhakti Curtis should be assaulted, I mean offended.
The guy is totally correct. His action shows just how racist and stupid it is to have a month named after the color of people’s skin.ff
