Excerpted from The New York Times: Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Wednesday morning that New York public schools will observe two of the most sacred Muslim holy days — Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
“This is a growing community in our city and in our schools and we wanted to recognize that.
Mr. de Blasio was surrounded on the podium by dozens of local activists and politicians who had pressed for the change. Carmen Fariña, the schools chancellor, took the podium to say that she hoped the change would lead to increased tolerance and understanding within the school system and city for Muslims.
A 2008 Columbia University study found that about 10 percent of New York City public school children are Muslim, and about 95 percent of Muslim children in the city attend public schools. Official estimates of the number of Muslims living in New York City vary from 600,000 to one million.
Since then, Muslim New Yorkers from a host of countries, including Bosnia and Montenegro, Egypt and Syria, Pakistan and Bangladesh have banded together to press the issue.
After Mr. de Blasio was elected mayor, a coalition of Muslim groups began holding rallies in the city’s five boroughs and distributing postcards that reminded Mr. de Blasio that including the Muslim school holidays is a matter of “recognition, inclusion and respect.”
“We did it!” said Shujaat Khan, one of the leaders of the coalition, taking the podium on Wednesday. “Si se puede!” he added, in an acknowledgment of the Latino groups that had helped organize for the change. Read the whole thing

What a shame, growing up I was wanting to take a job in NYC in the 90’s when I got done with school, felt like the place to be and make something of yourself, these days I thank god I was not that stupid, it went from a place spoken about in Glen Frey’s 1985 song “you belong to the city”, to the leftist hipster hellhole that it is.
