By winning its opening Algarve Cup match Wednesday night 2-1 over Norway, the U.S. women’s national team has secured three points in the first-round standings -- and a huge sense of relief. This trip to Portugal will not be as bad as last March, when a wildly bad 7th-place finish may have helped compel U.S. Soccer officials to fire head coach Tom Sermanni.

Morgan leads USA to convincing Algarve Cup win over Switzerland
The United States is now on top of the leader board in Group B and look forward to their third and final group game on Monday against Iceland, which should allow coach Jill Ellis' squad further fine tuning in this World Cup tune-up.

The victories over Norway and Switzerland also draw the U.S. women closer to a potential Algarve Cup final against France, which has also won both of its first two matches.

The United States improves to 3-1-0 this year. The United States opened 2015 with a pair of exhibitions, a 2-0 loss to France and a 1-0 victory over England.

U.S. coach Jill Ellis continued to tinker with her lineup in the match as the team prepares for the World Cup. The United States opens Group D play with Australia in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 8.

"I'm sick of losing," Lloyd said. "I'm sick of all the naysayers out there saying that you're second in the world, the U.S. is done, they had a horrible Algarve Cup last year. You know, I'm a winner. I want to win. It may not be pretty. It may not be shutouts but I'm a veteran. I've got to lead this time. I've got to show up at big moments. I'm just tired of losing."

The next game for the USA in this Algarve Cup is the third and final group match and it's against Iceland. But would anyone really blame them for looking just a little bit ahead to a much more interesting proposition?

Heck, why not? The French are dabbling in a little bit of that same hopeful anticipation.

"Of course we would like that," French midfielder Camille Abily told Fox Sports Sunday from the team's luxurious confines at the Almendoeira Golf Resort.
