Petty Officer of the watch on a warship while in port was issued a .45 and a magazine with one round.
On the 6 ships I served on the P.O. of the watch carried a Colt 45 auto with 5 rounds in the clip. Asked a Chief Gunners Mate why only 5 rounds in a 7 round magazine. He said they short loaded the magazine to extend the spring life in the magazine.
One round? When was this?
Our quarterdeck watch petty officers had a .45 with a full magazine but an empty chamber. This was in the 1966 to 1975 timeframe.
