It’s true: The rich really are ruder

Who among us has not felt the affront? Macadamia nuts arrive in a bag, not on a dish, and something shrivels in the soul. Are we animals? Did we execute the challenging task of being born insanely wealthy only to eat in-flight snacks from a bag?!

We did not. And that is why, when Korean Air heiress Cho Hyun-ah was confronted by a bag of nuts on a flight out of New York early last December, she grew enraged and forced the plane back to the gate. As a result of the incident, Ms. Cho, the 40-year-old daughter of the airline’s chairman, Cho Yang-ho, was charged, among other things, with assault and obstructing an airline captain in the performance of his duties.

In custody since Dec. 30, she was was convicted last week of violating aviation safety law and sentenced to a year in prison. Another executive who tried to cover up the incident was sentenced to eight months. Many observers consider the sentences too light, given the rampant nepotism and privilege enjoyed by second- and third-generation members of South Korea’s business elite.

“If she were considerate to people, if she didn’t treat employees like slaves, if she could have controlled her emotion,” the chief judge said, “this case would not have happened.” But consider the deeper truth of the matter: It was not really her fault.

The author is a marxist jackass with George W. Bush living rent-free in his mind. I offer the following:

When the sheer luck of the birthright lottery is converted via psychological magic into a sense of entitlement, expectations of special treatment and a delusional belief that tax reform constitutes “class warfare” are predictable. Prof. Piff confirms experimentally the arguments of Aaron James’s 2012 book Assholes: A Theory. Like George W. Bush, some people are born on third base and think they hit a triple.

in support of my thesis.

You're right - too light of a sentence.

Yet another case of "don't you know who I am"-itis.

The author hates rich people, and wants to drag everyone down into equality.

By all accounts, GWB, even with his well documented faults, is an extremely egalitarian, polite and considerate man.

I happen to think that most derogatory classifications and descriptions of college professors, particularly those in Philosophy, are far more accurate than those derogatory generalizations applied to wealthy people.

I think that is because you can become wealthy, but you still remain “you”, especially if you got there by hard work.

College professors, especially Philosophy professors, are indoctrinated to be skulls full of liberal mush as students, and have to believe it fully to teach it to their young students.

As you can tell, I have a lot of contempt for most of those people, and more respect for people who have made money.

I subscribe to the “Universal A**hole Theory”.

Basically, we are all a-holes at some time or another, especially when driving. We may not mean to cut someone off, and we may do it only once in every 1000 trips in our car, but when you take into account that there are millions of us on the road at any given time, either you, or some complete stranger, both of whom might be perfectly polite and competent drivers, may get a deserved middle finger.

That mindset helps me be far more tolerant on the road...:)

Francesco Schettino, disgraced captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, this “reckless idiot” – with traces of cocaine in his hair

This fact was kept quiet.

Have you looked at the McDonald videos? Entitlement is not restricted to the rich, it is just entitlement attitude no matter whether you get it from the Government or Daddy. It just leads to rude behavior.

VP Joe Biden is rich. How much did he give to various charities this year? 10 or 15 dollars as usual. Has all the money in the world, he as the scum in the WH also, yet neither give a dime. That is just as snobbish and rude as being rude with your mouth. My wife and I both are retired and we gave “______” (far more than these fools combined) this year to our church, charities, soup bowls, soup kitchens, can food to food banks, missionary groups, etc. We gave because our hearts said to and because our LORD blessed us far beyond our needs and we give back because we need too, want too, and the LORD requires it.

Writer comes to a conclusion about 10 million people by way of a sample of one.

I’m guessing socialist.

Whoa. That's a little more than a slap on the wrist. I can't say I disapprove, but it doesn't really serve the author's thesis very well.

In my personal experience "The Rich" don't really even know who they are most of the time and are no more or less rude than anyone else, but understand that my personal experience is heavily weighted toward American culture. Nevertheless, there is more than a hint of real class hostility in the author's choice of phrasing. I can think of few wealthy individuals who are less pretentious than George W. Bush, for example. Certainly the issue may be more pronounced in the glitterati-infested jungles of Monaco or Dubai, the Hamptons or the Cote d'Azur, but as long as they leave me alone I'm fine with leaving them alone. Just my $0.02.
