Beignets from Cafe De Monde are definitely on the list. I have also been mapping our locations on spotcrime.com. We are renting a car so an avoid ghetto app would be ideal!
Four days, if you’re a foodie, is about all you can take. Try to schedule things so you can eat three small and one big meals a day.
Last time we were there, over Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Palace Cafe, I actually said, “I think I’ve had enough butter.”
The food will make you crazy! In a good way.
Go to www.nomenu.com for more than you hope for about the food. Trust Tom Fitzmorris. He knows food and is honest.
Eat at The Gumbo Shop!
Yep, I spent about 14 years in the hood of New Orleans right of off Carrollton Avenue, and this was one of the better areas compared to other areas of the city.
It was Hell. I mean I have never seen such insanity in all my life.
That is not a place that I ever want to return to, though I do visit friends in Metairie, the suburbs, fairly often.
Best thing is to know exactly where you are going, exactly how you are going to get there, where you are going to park, make sure you have your phone with you in case of emergency, and it may be wise to have other emergency tools with you as well.
The Audubon Zoo and the Audubon Aquarium are great....................
and better casinos.........................
Go to the Central Grocery on Decatur Street and get yourself one of their Muffaletta sandwiches. And get youself some beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde.
I drove to New Orleans, and visited several of the plantations around the area: Destrehan, Laura, Nottoway, San Francisco, Magnolia, etc. I also took one of the walking ghost tours. Booked myself a bus tour of various sites in the city at the hotel I stayed at. Drove out to the Port Hudson (Civil War) Historic Site, took a riverboat ride that stopped at Chalmette Battlefield, visited the Beauregard-Keyes House (General P.G.T. Beauregard, CSA).
The advice given to us was to stay in the French Quarter if we planned on going out at night. Cemeteries should be visited during the day and with a tour.
The Moon Walk is right by there and was nice when I was a kid. You go down by the river. I don’t know if it’s safe these days. I was a little less enchanted when I found out it was named not for the white orb in the sky but for Mary Landrieu’s daddy. :o
The coffee at CDM has gone way down hill. Too thin. Beignets also getting smaller.
What a shame. Back in the day, it was enjoyable there.
World War 2 Museum is a must. Take your time and read the information and watch the short films and interviews. Coolest thing there is the view from the German bunker the morning of July 6 just before they saw the Armada.
Ride the street car to the cemeteries and take a stroll. They are super unique. Go to Lafittes on Bourbon that is the oldest bar in the US. Take a day trip down to the Bayou and see some of the locals (alligators).
On Frenchmen St? BS. Don’t go weird places at weird hours, don’t go looking for drugs, and don’t be walking the streets in the wee hours. You’ll have a wonderful time.
Expect a two hour wait for a table after 6. No reservations for parties less than 6. Worth the wait. The trolly ride back is great at night. Hard to have a better night.
Dante’s Kitchen
Cant’t remember where it’s at because I’m from Pittsburgh, but we took a cab there in October & had one of the top 5 meals of my life.
Commander’s Palace is good too but has some seriously strange decor. Frenchman St has some places with excellent craft cocktails. Antoine’s is also a safe bet.
Don’t go. That’s my suggestion.
Go to Antoine’s. Very, very nice. Good food, nice place (dress nicely), good service. Legendary.
Go To Chalmette battle site. I know it got completely flooded by the hurricane, but we visited just 3 months before that disaster.
Glad we made it in before the disaster. (Honeymoon - part of it.)
Yes the WWII Museum is great.
Arnaud’s I think that is the name of the place. Great menu, lunch special, etc.
Commander’s Palace, last time we were there had super cheap martinis....
Breakfast = The Old Coffeepot restaurant
Brennans is GREAT!
French Market Cafe DuMonde has the BEST coffee on earth.
HUGE desserts at Wolfgang Puck in the Warehouse Dist.
