I quite clearly remember the word “savages” from the book, repeatedly. Kyle may have meant Al Qaeda or other lowlifes, many of whom were nonetheless Iraqi. I’m sure he didn’t paint all Iraqis with that brush.
Considering what the people of that country have experienced at the hands of some of their countrymen, from Saddam to ISIS, most of them would probably consider the term savages as too mild.
