Gov. Walker backs citizenship pathway for illegal immigrants [July 03, 2013]

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) says he supports a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the country illegally as part of an overhaul of the nation's immigration system.

"If people want to come here and work hard and benefit, I don't care whether they come from Mexico or Ireland or Germany or Canada or South Africa or anywhere else," Walker said Tuesday during an interview with the Daily Herald Media Editorial Board of Wisconsin. "I want them here."

Walker was then asked about the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally. The editorial board asked if he could "envision a world where with the right penalties and waiting periods and meet the requirements where those people could get citizenship?"

"Sure," Walker responded. "I mean I think it makes sense." Walker's comments came roughly a week after the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bipartisan immigration reform proposal that includes a pathway to citizenship.

The proposal strengthens border security along the U.S.-Mexico border by doubling the length of fencing across the border and also doubling the number of border patrol agents. Walker said he had not fully reviewed the Senate bill and has not taken a position on the legislation.

Walker's comments separate him from some conservative House lawmakers who have said they cannot support the Senate immigration reform bill because it includes a pathway to citizenship.

You lie.

You also should develop a bit more faith in Cruz, that way you wouldn’t feel the need to trick others to support him.

This post is misleading at best. If the poster wants credibility, they should at least point out that these comments are a year and a half old. As for the substance, it’s somewhat disturbing, but I don’t see him wholeheartedly endorsing a comprehensive reform bill, he just leaves the door open for the possibility of a guest worker program at some point — presumably after stringent border security requirements are met.

I don’t like that position, but I believe he’s backed off quite a bit lately and said essentially we can do NOTHING until we properly secure the border. This puts him no worse than most other candidates on this issue — save Ted Cruz and a couple others.

I think though that you have to look at the guy’s overall record. He has a record of getting results in WI even in the face of the most fierce opposition. I would say he’s with us on 95% of the issues and I would definitely support him without reservation in the general.

That said, I would rather have Ted Cruz and I need to know a little more about Dr. Carson but he sounds pretty good too. Aside from Cruz, Carson and Walker, I see no other candidate I could get enthusiastic about.

“This post is misleading at best”

Recent experience is causing me to question whether of not Cruz posters here on FR are representative of the Cruz campaign.

I know I’ve developed a sudden and huge distrust as a result of their behavior.

The interview can be watched here.

Did any of you bother to watch it? Had you, you'd see he's not talking about amnesty. He is talking about legal immigration.

Just like Governor Walker, I can also "envision a world where with the right penalties and waiting periods and meet the requirements where those people could get citizenship." That is, go home, go to the end of the legal immigration line, apply, and wait your turn like everybody else.

As much as I like some of Governor Walker’s ideas, this is not good one. Again we have a immigration plan in place, why don’t we just enforce it. It worked well in the pre-Obama days.

OTH, why don’t we just have a rule like Switzerland where the applicant needs to be of good moral character and have a net worth of $400,000 or some qualifying amount of wealth to support themselves before qualifying for citizenship.

Under no circumstances should immigrants be given amnesty if they are criminals and felons, unemployed and unskilled, cannot support themselves and their families, and pay taxes.

“If you say you are against a pathway, you are saying ANYONE who overstayed a visa can NEVER be a citizen”

Baloney. Tell them to go back home and get in line the legal way.

Underhanded politics.

I wonder if this is what the Cruz campaign is going to be built on?

The comments near the end of this thread are worth reading.

Slight of hand from Cruz supporters is at work, and not for the first time.

See post 33, it does, in fact, add to my assertions that this was done purposely.

I wonder if the entire Cruz campaign is going to be like this?

Fun while he lasted...

What the H3LL is so damn hard about supporting the enforcement of the law AS WRITTEN?

Oh well...he just makes it EASIER for us to go with Cruz (assuming he gets it).

Doesn’t our legal system allow for remedies for past transgressions?
Wouldn’t this transgression somehow fit into that system?

“Eat boiled crow ...”

Eat it yourself. The story you’re all hopped up about is six months old.

Walker joins immigration lawsuit with Gov. Abbot - (TX) to block Obama’s immigration move.
