Otoh, why would tampering be necessary? If Grannie Dunham registered a birth, then the announcements would have appeared in the papers. Why would anyone subsequently need to tamper with them?

Clarification:
Earlier, when I referred to the something written down that abercrobmies investigators found in the archives, I was thinking of a hand-filled out form for a registration of home birth, as opposed to the usual all typewritten LFBC except for signatures at the bottom.
