Hell, Sherman’s actions were responsible for the deaths of THOUSANDS of Southern civilians due to privation, starvation, and disease (his concept of Total War). However, he did not specifically order the deaths or murders of civilians, nor would he ever have considered it (though, he would have had no qualms about hanging journalists, whom he utterly despised).
