If they couldn’t handle General George Patton 70 years ago there’s not a chance today.

Agree to some extent but Patton was truly an outlier even back in his day. A large portion of the brass was kissing political @ss back then too.

Patton knew the military was to “defeat the enemy on the field of battle.”

Today’s military is a social playground for every miscreant in DC.

The Army brass in Europe tried to slow down, hinder, and even stop Patton, Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Montgomery. If they had let him run free, I really believe he would have ended the war a lot quicker. And nipped the plans of Stalin in the bud while he waa at it. His tactics were the kind the Germans had respect for, and were afraid of.

It is always the way. In peace time the politicians and the cookie pushers edge out the fighting generals. When the stuff hits the fan, the fighting men rise to the surface and win the fight.

While we need men like Patton more than ever, the writer--himself, a true son of the Old Dominion--is probably right. It is certain that the present occupant of the White House would never let a contemporary Patton appear on any list of those recommended for promotion.

This also suggests a fact that has come to be very much over-looked in the contemporary media bias against traditional Southern culture, and that is the tremendous contribution that the Military tradition of many families in the Old South has made throughout American History.

General Patton was a true American hero, whose brilliance in the field, undoubtedly shortened World War II in Europe, saving many thousands of lives. May his memory always be honored by true Americans.

I no that I probably would not of liked Paton personally but the job of a general is not to be liked. His job is to win wars while getting as few of his men killed in the process as possible. Paton was good at his job. Paton realized that if you wanted to command men to risk there lives they had to respect you and believe that the general would be willing to do everything that he ordered someone else to do. if given a choice during WW2 on who would command me in battle. I would of chosen Patton out of all the allied commanders

Patton wanted to join up with the Germans(after getting rid of the Nazis) and drive the Russians out of Europe. History proved him to be quite right. I understand that Churchill regretted not doing so, after the fact.

History proved that it would have been very nice to do this.

It does not prove that it was feasible, a good idea, or that the results would have been worth the incredible cost in lives and money.

However, it pretty much does indicate that the American people and soldiers would not have stood for any such thing. turning on an ally in mid-war is possible only for a dictatorship, as Hitler did when he attacked Stalin. Democracies have to make such decisions by something approaching consensus. Notably, our Constitution requires it.
