Texas theater to show “Team America” in place of canceled “Interview”

Sometimes, you just need Texas. As the rest of the entertainment industry was being brought to its knees by the threat of more hacking and terrorism, a theater in Texas decided to both capitalize on this story and stand up for freedom of speech. The only bummer is they’re holding a free screening, as I’d hoped they’d rake in a bunch of cash for filling a gap in the market, which would be as appropriately American as the statement they’re making about our values. They should be rewarded, and they will be, at least with brand recognition and good will:

Fresh off the disappointing news that Sony Pictures has cancelled the December 25th release of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s comedy, The Interview, the Alamo Drafthouse announced that, in its place, they’ll screen Matt Parker and Trey Stone‘s Team America: World Police.

This won’t be at every theater for every screening unfortunately. In fact, as of right now, it’s just one night, one show, at one theater. But it’s a clever, wonderful piece of programming from a chain known for that kind of thing. Read more about the Team America The Interview screening below.

Drafthouse announced the Team America The Interview idea on their Facebook page. Team America will screen December 27 at 7 p.m. at the Dallas Fort-Worth location. It’s a free screening and will be a sing-a-long, because of course it is.

In the only good news in The Hollywood Reporter today, we find out “American flags and other patriotic items will be given out by theater employees, Wallace says.” Because America, dammit.

Bonus: Matt Stone and Trey Parker might make some money off of this. As two of the few actually courageous artists in the entertainment industry, I’m all about that. Here’s hoping this idea spreads, especially if Sony continues to cave to terrorists, as looks likely.

If I was anywhere near this theater I would go and buy $50 worth of popcorn and soda just to thank them.

Or maybe I’d spring for the large sizes...

Rog was not amused. Took too many of his sacred cows to the slaughterhouse.

Ebert Review: Team America

1 Star

“What are you rebelling against, Johnny?”

“Whaddya got?” )

-Marlon Brando in “The Wild One” If this dialogue is not inscribed over the doors of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it should be. Their “Team America: World Police” is an equal opportunity offender, and waves of unease will flow over first one segment of their audience, and then another. Like a cocky teenager who’s had a couple of drinks before the party, they don’t have a plan for who they want to offend, only an intention to be as offensive as possible...

...Opposing Team America is the Film Actors’ Guild, or FAG, ho, ho, with puppets representing Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn (who has written an angry letter about the movie to Parker and Stone). No real point is made about the actors’ activism; they exist in the movie essentially to be ridiculed for existing at all, I guess. Hans Blix, the U.N. chief weapons inspector, also turns up, and has a fruitless encounter with the North Korean dictator. Some of the scenes are set to music, including such tunes as “Pearl Harbor Sucked and I Miss You” and “America — F***, Yeah!”

If I were asked to extract a political position from the movie, I’d be baffled. It is neither for nor against the war on terrorism, just dedicated to ridiculing those who wage it and those who oppose it. The White House gets a free pass, since the movie seems to think Team America makes its own policies without political direction.

I wasn’t offended by the movie’s content so much as by its nihilism. At a time when the world is in crisis and the country faces an important election, the response of Parker, Stone and company is to sneer at both sides — indeed, at anyone who takes the current world situation seriously. They may be right that some of us are puppets, but they’re wrong that all of us are fools, and dead wrong that it doesn’t matter.

Rog doesn't get it. If he were in the least perceptive he'd notice who's laughing and who isn't and figure out from there where the movie is coming from. And, if he's really perceptive, that he's one of the ones being mocked.

F yeah!

It was an amazing movie. I wasn’t thinking in terms of offensiveness at all, just amazement. I mean, “America, F*** yeah!” ... I’ll go with that!

I will say the most amazing part was the BJ sequence. I don’t think I’ll ever figure that one out. You know, with puppets ... amazing.

Hollywood should not be making films about the assassination of foreign leaders. That goes for films like The Equalizer where Denzel Washington’s character infiltrates the Russian Presidential Palace and assassinates the Russian leader named Pushkin, a thinly-veiled substitute for Putin. Did the film company run that one past the Rand think tank and the State Dept too, and did they give their approval hoping copies would leak into Russia and destabilize the country and that the people would assassinate their own leader.

Tim Robbins: Let me explain to you how this works: you see, the corporations finance Team America, and then Team America goes out... and the corporations sit there in their... in their corporation buildings, and... and, and see, they're all corporation-y... and they make money.
