Last month there was a shooting at Florida State University where three students were shot by a mentally disturbed man before the police arrived. One of the students had a concealed carry permit, but was not allowed to have his defensive firearm with him. Another witness was a combat veteran who said that he had a clear shot at the attacker, but was also prevented from having his firearm with him by current law.
A bill has been filed in the Florida Senate to restore the ability of permit holders to carry their firearms on campus, as they can off campus From northescambia.com:
We have seen that the current Gun-Free Zone policies have done nothing to curb violence, both in our state and nationwide, Culbreath wrote in a Nov. 24 news release. As criminals dont abide by these policies, they only serve to prevent victims from having the ability to defend themselves and their peers. In 2013, the courts ruled that Florida Universities cannot ban guns from student's vehicles that are on campus.
1) Somebody should be carrying on campus. Stupid to have no one carry.
2) I have never been in favor of guns on campus - young boys, alcohol, jealously, testosterone out of control.
3) In this case, would have been nice if these young men did have access to guns.
I just worry about crazy college kids and alcohol and guns. Young men get terribly jealous too easily, testosterone out of control and if their girl dumps them for another guy, stupid kid could do something he’d pay for the rest of his life. I just don’t know the answer on this.
You are wrong, and perhaps projecting concerns about your own lack of self-control on others. If your concerns were valid, we’d have seen tons of shootings on campuses which allow carry.
lol. I just love people who think they are “right” about everything. “You are wrong” is not thoughtful discourse, obviously you’re not much of a thinker.
Me too, I am very pro 2nd amendment. Stupid kids do stupid things. I work at a college, no alcohol or drugs on campus. Right... every now and then someone gets kicked out of student housing for drugs, guns (usually bb guns) or alcohol. I strongly believe our security guys should qualify and carry and I am a big advocate of teachers/admin personnelly carrying. Our state allows for guns on campus but our college applies for an exemption every 2 years. If there was a way to make sure the kids didn't carry while drinking, I'd be all for it. It's not the guns that scare me, it's the combination of alcohol and guns. I see as security you understand what you're up against.
I notice you didn’t address my point, which was also made in the article.
Every CCW reg I have seen already has a prohibition against carrying while imbibing.
In which State is your college? I’m sure if you check the statutes, you will find that CCW is disallowed while under the influence. I have had CCW in several States and all had this in common.
Imbibing or imbibing to excess? I’ve tried to research this and have not had much luck. Personally I never drink while carrying. When my wife and I go out I refer to it as 3D- designated driver and defense.
I’m pretty sure you’re right about that but these are college kids. Back in the day, you could go to a high school and there were gun racks and guns in half the pickups in the parking lot. Nobody stole the guns, nobody shot anybody. But kids nowadays are not raised with guns, they don’t seem to understand. I believe they were better off getting bb guns when they’re six and working their way up. These college kids can’t even seem to handle a bb gun as there have been car windows shot out. State is Kansas but kids come from all over of course.
Anyway, I did look up how many colleges allow you to carry - they are few and far between. Even if the state (like ours) allows carry - colleges often request exemptions. There are no colleges (according to the website) in the state of Kansas that allow carrying on campus. Arkansas had a few, Colorado a few and there were some more.
Since you have so little faith in our youth, may I assume that you are lobbying your Congressman to raise the age of eligibility for the military to 21?
