Quit?

Why?

Smoking causes busy bodies and statistics. ...

Everyone gets in on the beat down...

His Family smells Money now ,$75 Million worth

I love it! New York was worried about what? a couple hundred of untaxed cigarettes. Now they will wish they weren’t so insane to worry about untaxed cigarettes. Of course the result won’t be to lower the taxes on cigarettes....oh no.

Comic books too. Used to be 12 cents in the mid-’60s.

Yeah- me too probably.

But if they’re selling stolen or smuggled goods (that may be funding Hezbollah), the seller no innocent victim, he’d the one interfacing with criminals and perhaps terrorists.

Another issue is the ‘broken windows’ theory... can’t let small crimes run rampant, creates an air of lawlessness, ala Giuliani.

Why is the NYPD enforcing tax laws?

Issue was probably lack of business license, I’d assume- that would be more their jurisdiction

CPI Inflation Calculator from the US Gov Bureau of Labor Statistics.

I won't get into the debate over whether or not BLS is cooking the books on inflation. That's way outside my expertise.

This tax war on tobacco may expand to a tax war on booze and then to all of life’s essentials such as clothing, food and medicines and finally on age itself — the older one gets, the higher one’s taxes.

What about his fault for doing business with the mafia... or worse?

What nonsense. Do you have any information that he was dealing with the mafia... or worse?!?!

He was likely buying a carton of cigarettes (and paying the taxes) because he was able to scrape together the $40 that the other losers in his neighborhood couldn't. Then he would sell the individual cigarettes at probably something like twice his unit cost.

Small time entrepreneur, not internation TERRORIST!!

The cops could have handled it better but the perp contributed greatly to his own demise, IMHO

It's a disturbingly regressive tax. People who have the means to do so buy their cigarettes elsewhere. It's left to the underclass to bear the burden. And the fund the bad guys argument?....uhhhh, a government that overtaxes, overspends, and overcontrols is a bad guy.

I could really get into protesting this and its consequences. This NYC situation is a death caused by unfair taxation.

Tobacco kills. Swishers killed Mike Brown, and loose fags killed Gardner.

The article I linked has a federal case where Hezbollah was selling smuggled cigs in MI, both through shops and on the street.

I don’t have any more idea where Garder himself bought his supply than you do, but if you are one who tries to not spend $ in ways where it goes to our enemies, cigs without a stamp are to be avoided in general.

The most pathetic argument for totalitarian policing I've ever heard.
