Derek is a more than one person? Why the plural “they”? Are we confused about its sex?

That was so hard to read. If you don't want to use "he" or "she" don't use words that confuse. Rewrite the sentence leaving out the offending pronoun. e.g., "reported receiving threats of rape on Facebook..."

I found that confusing, as well.
But who are we to judge? Perhaps Derek identifies as a multiple? Maybe that is the next movement coming along now that we have individuals who say they “identify” as female when they are actually male and vice versa.
