In one classroom, a teacher makes Michael Brown the lesson of the day
The Washington Post's Answer Sheet ^ | November 27, 2014 | Valerie Strauss

Posted on 11/27/2014 11:49:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

On Nov. 25th, a grand jury in Ferguson voted not to indict a white police officer, Darren Wilson, in the shooting of an unarmed teenager, Michael Brown, last August in a case that has stirred civil unrest and accusations of racism by white law enforcement officials. The next day, Steve Singer, a teacher in suburban Pittsburgh went to school and realized that he could not carry on as usual but that he had to address what was transpiring in Missouri. This is his account of what happened that day. Singer is a husband, father, blogger and education advocate who teaches eighth-grade Language Arts at a suburban school near Pittsburgh, Pa. He is an administrator with The Badass Teachers Association and serves on the Yinzercation Steering Committee. He gave me permission to republish this post, which first appeared on his blog, at http://www.gadflyonthewallblog.wordpress.com, where this appeared.

Singer teaches the academic, or middle-track students at his school. His classes are made up of roughly 70 percent minority students, and an even higher percentage of his students come from low socioeconomic status households. Not surprisingly, standardized test scores are low, but creativity, passion and critical thinking skills are high. Singer says he believes in every one of his students and would do almost anything to help them succeed....

Wilson called the area where Brown was shot a “hostile environment.”

“There’s a lot of gangs that reside or associate with that area. There’s a lot of violence in that area, there’s a lot of gun activity, drug activity, it is just not a very well-liked community. That community doesn’t like the police.”

Cops are not welcome in their community because they interfere with their lawless culture of drugs sales, prostitution and robbery. Children are raised to be the next cog in the illegal drug industry—or prostitution industry. The politicians are bought off to let all the illegal activity slide through the culture. There is a cynical nature to this whole swamp of corruption: It keeps poor black kids employed. These poor black kids are just cogs and are kept in their place by their drug addled, welfare addled, affirmative action culture with no father in the home.

Our society segregates public schools into black and white. It defunds the black schools, closes them and funnels the wastrels into privatized for-profit charters while leaving the best facilities and Cadillac funding for the elite and privileged.

Aside from Michael Brown, the author had this to say about the public schools. The guy doesn't have a clue about the system he himself works in. Obviously a union stalwart as well.

Why does this keep happening??? (sob) He had to reach back over FIFTY YEARS to get his list of killings.
Why do so many black murderers kill other blacks?? That's a more valid question.

And how about a moment of silence for the THOUSANDS of whites murdered by blacks? (and that's every year)
Media? libs?

This case gives the most credence to the true goal; delegitimize the concept and dilute the opposition of real police brutality.

The government supports the Police State. Using this incident to fan the flames gets you to shut up about about the Militarized Police state and in general police brutality.

I have wondered many times how Wilson has escaped being murdered. I can’t understand it. The “media” has done everything to make this happen, even to publishing his address and still he’s alive. How did that even happen????

“It sounds like he has a lot of white guilt. I do not suffer from that disease.”

Is it really White Guilt? Or is it a Superiority Complex? As in “I am superior to you because I believe or feel this way about this or that topic.” Is it this need to feel superior that causes them to ignore, distort or discount reality, truth and facts? And is this need to feel superior a sort of crazy competition as to who is the most superior in their feelings, beliefs or views?

"crazy girlfriend"

How right you are. I had a crazy ex-girl friend who tried to do just that to me. She barged into my home one time, started a commotion, refused to leave, and then had to be forcibly shoved out of my house. She then called the cops and claimed I'd beaten her.

When the cops showed up, I had to do some fast talking. But since she had pulled a butcher knife out of a drawer and threatened to kill herself, she ended up getting thrown in the pokey while I avoided it. Close call. When someone is standing over you with a knife in their hands, you never know what they might do.

"Shame on you"

What I'd like to do is pin a badge on all liberal sob sisters like this clown, and put them in a life or death situation. And no avoiding their lawful duties by simply driving away. Their job is to take dangerous, violent criminals off the street.

After Mister Lib Teacher got punched in the face by a person much larger than him simply for telling him to quit walking in the middle of the street, he'd be singing (no pun intended) a different tune. I think. Some people are beyond learning.

It could be both. I know libtards tend to feel superior, but I think many of them feel guilty too. Either way, I tend to STRONGLY dislike the slime bags.

Steve Singer, a severely mentally retarded teacher in suburban Pittsburgh, could have made the "moments" so much more valuable by explaining honestly the critical elements of the Michael Brown case.

Brown committed strong-arm robbery and assault against the store owner. Explain those crimes to the up-and-coming thugs, along with the possible charges for each. Casually include the fact that the use of deadly force is legitimate to stop or prevent either or both of these behaviors.

Brown committed assault, aggravated assault, and attempted murder against a police officer, and perhaps a few others that were not obvious from a distance. Explain those crimes to the up-and-coming thugs, along with the possible charges for each. Casually include the fact that the use of deadly force is legitimate in response to such behavior. Any reasonable person would rightly expect to have their carcass thoroughly perforated by gunshots for such behavior.

Mr. Steve Singer, when you start teaching these unreasonable thugs about reasonable responses to their unreasonable behavior, you will start to see some recognition in their little eyes that their actions have consequences. They may get away with their criminal behavior hundreds of times before a "consequence" finally hits home, but they should understand that it will eventually arrive.

One boy asked me, “Why does this keep happening, Mr. Singer?” It was the question of which I had been most afraid. As a teacher, it’s always uncomfortable to admit the limits of your knowledge.
"Teaching" these kids that they are helpless victims is the cause of this whole incident in the first place.
”Bad things start to happen when you get more than 500 to 1000 people together in the same place.” - In Search of Excellence, Tom Peters et al.
But even at that, “this” does not “keep happening.” It happens rarely enough that it can be made into a nationwide cause celebre.

What keeps happening is blacks killing blacks - and also killing whites. The statistics are what they are. What keeps happening is blacks being unwilling or not safely able to dissent from the “might makes right” attitude. Blacks are 90% Democrat because they are afraid not to be.

Why does this keep happening? Because the people who want it to happen have too much power to be stopped. And because people act as enablers of it.

I keep asking myself the same question... of all the readily available examples of police misconduct, why pick one that is bogus in which to anchor your cause?
