That would probably be counter-productive, if they have already been deposed for the grand jury. If they are dead, a court would likely admit that testimony and the prosecution loses the ability to cross-examine them.

Yeah, BUT then there are the other two witnesses, who will be very easy to cross examine and all to eager to say they lied to the grand jury.
