IIRC at the liberation of Buchenwald the G.I.’s dealt out rough justice, killing more than 100 black uniformed SS-men plus more than a few Nazis who had donned striped prisoner garb (and were quickly fingered by their former victims).

It took some time for officers to regain control of their men. No one was court-martialed, apparently.

There were similar killings in other liberated camps. Investigations were performed, but ultimately went nowhere. In Dachau the US commander sat the camp commandant on a pile of dead bodies and had the citizens of the town pass by him one by one and spit on him or strike him. In one of the camps I recently read the Mayor and his wife after viewing the camp went home and slit their wrists.
