Lord knows I'm no fan of McCain, but that's a bum rap.
The Keating Five initially consisted of four Democrats (Senators Cranston, Riegle, DeConcini, Glenn). Basically, the Democrat Senate majority agreed to mete out punishment for the affair if one Republican was involved -- to make it "bi-partisan". The Republican minority offered up McCain -- who was on the fringe of the scandal.
Cranston, the ringleader, was then "reprimanded", Riegle and DeConcini were "criticized for acting improperly". Their political careers were essentially terminated.
Glenn and McCain, both being recognized "heroes", were then "cleared of impropriety, but criticized for poor judgment".
All in all, it was a very political exercise and is probably part of what made McCain what he is -- a selfish, insubordinate, ungracious asshole.
They were all 5 of them crooks. and McCain spoke up for the head rat. I followed the story and he’s dirty as far as I’m concerned.
