First lady to children: ‘Don’t be mad’ over healthier school lunches
The Hill ^ | September 26, 2014 | Justin Sink

First lady Michelle Obama said it was "natural" that kids are "grumbling" over new requirements for schools to fill vending machines and lunch lines with healthier food, but that it would not deter her from improving child nutrition.

"Change is hard," the first lady said in an interview with Channel One. "And the thing about highly processed, sugary, salty food is that you get addicted to it. I don’t want to just settle because it’s hard."

The first lady said she knew children "are grumbling because they have to make changes," and said her daughters roll their eyes when she forces them to eat their vegetables. "But I know that I’m doing it because I’m giving my kids the best that I know I can give them," Obama said.

The first lady also encouraged children to try "vegetables that have a little flavor, sweetness" to them like broccoli, celery and carrots.

"Don’t be mad because there are changes," she said. "Figure out why the changes are important, and then find out how you make it work for you."

New requirements for snacks sold in school vending machines implemented this year require food to be less than 200 calories, have less than 35 percent saturated fat, and have zero grams of trans fat. The switch has elicited some outrage on social media, with students complaining that some of their favorite treats are no longer available.

The swap has also given additional ammunition to congressional Republicans, who are pushing the administration to allow some schools to opt out of new, stricter school lunch requirements. The GOP lawmakers say the new regulations are driving up lunch costs for schools, and that children aren't eating food they don't like.

But the first lady dismissed those complaints, saying there was a way to serve food that was healthy and still tasted good.

"Look, I wouldn’t want to eat a nasty lunch either. Quite frankly, no one wants to eat bad food," Obama said.

She added that she did not "want to give up because it's expensive."

"I don't want that to be the excuse," she said.

You know, in addition to the lack of play time the schools have also eliminated the education part too.

What a dismal failure our public schools have become. It’s so shameful.

Considering so much of America's obesity is among those on welfare/EBT cards...seems that Michelle would set to limit these entitlement recipients to ONLY healthy food choices. Michelle certainly needs her 'quest' to center on changing EBT users' grocery shopping habits.

Sodas, high fat entrees, snack foods, expensive 'luxury' foods, etc would all be verboten. Better yet, my suggestion would be welfare recipients be limited to 'shopping' at government warehouse commodities for their nutritional needs.

The basic foods (meats/fruits/vegetables/dairy/starches..etc) would be available. And perhaps meal planning, cooking/baking lessons would be available to all. Luxury items, high fat, high sugar, can be purchased at regular stores with their own money. Funds preferably earned at a learned vocation.

I believe in society providing a bonafide though temporary 'safety net' for those in dire needs. And also those finding themselves in unfortunate circumstances. But with Democrats 'buying' votes in the form of greatly expanding the welfare state...our society now experiences those in an entitlement permanent hammock.

Michelle, welfare recipients need to change their families' habits that are now approaching a third generation of our citizens.

Lo behold anything gets between the wookie and her chow. I’d guess it would be akin to a badger attack.

“She added that she did not ‘want to give up because it’s expensive.’”

How about giving up because the food is tasteless, is not enough to fill the kids up, and they are throwing the food away? At what point will she say, “This just isn’t working?”

Wait, don’t answer that...

Mad? The kids are starving! My mother’s neighbor has 4 school-age children and that is their biggest complaint, they are still hungry after lunch. They often head over to my mother’s for snacks or ‘second lunch’ while waiting for their mom to get home from work.

Michelle can vouch for making “change” work for you. She undoubtedly changed her diet somewhat after moving into the people’s house.

There is a pervasive ugliness emanating from that woman(?) that no amount of cosmetics, surgery or airbrushing will ever be able to hide.

She has no Constitutional authority given her position as wife of POTUS to change anything or tell anyone what they can and can not eat. Salt? Pick up a blasted history book. Salt for thousands of years has been used to preserve meat at levels far above what is consumed today. Sugars? Let parents and the individual kids doctor decide. Some persons have hypoglycemia issues not related to Diabetes. It doesn't mean the person is Diabetic it means their body requires more sugars and usually needs them throughout the day. If their levels drop to low they can pass out.

Instead of trying to dictate peoples eating habits here's a better idea. Have your husband end the federal requirements of Liberal propaganda and indoctrination programs which have taken the place of recess and physical education. My generation had PE for at least three years in high school and we ate what we wanted when we wanted too. Our cafeteria had a sandwich and potato chip line. My 16 year old grandson eats like a starving buffalo. He eats a plenty both healthy meals and junk food snacks. He's very skinny and he's also on the football team.

Oh BTW lady you need to loose about 50 plus pounds yourself. Pull that log from your own eyes first.

These people think they have the right to tell us and our children what to eat and drink, and when to die. Liberals disgust me.

“she has zero authority to force schools or anyone else, to do anything. why they listen, i don’t know.”

A wise engineer with much influence at my company once described the different kinds of authority. There’s real authority which comes from ownership and the ability to hire and fire. There’s positional authority where you’re the guy assigned the job but with no power to hire or fire. This person must lead by example and play politics and good will to achieve his ends. Then there’s influence gained by respect (what he had). People have seen you succeed and are willing to follow your advice. To this Michelle adds a fourth type. She’s a fellow traveler and is recognized as such. Eager fellow travelers scramble for the opportunity she gives for them to do what they wanted to do all along, control people.
