There are some abandoned buildings there but Mexicantown is actually a pretty decent neighborhood. Its where a lot of the white collar transplants from NY are landing.
The dirty secret in SE Michigan is that the mexican illegals are taking over all of the cities abandoned by GM and the rest of the auto industry. Add to that the balkanization of the three main counties in SE Michigan (Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland). There’s a concentration of DOD work in Warren , (TACOM), and all of there engineering is aggresively spied on by the chinese and indians.
I drive under the railway tracks at the right of the old train station (coming left of Michigan avenue from Michigan/Trumball area) to get to Mexicantown and to go to Edison. Lots of graffiti as you come out of the eerie underpass. Try that route. You could make a scene from a horror film at that underpass.
