More than half a lifetime ago the United States Air Force stationed me in Libya. It was 1956 and I was 18 years old. A statistic that stuck in my mind then was that there were only sixteen Medical Doctors in the entire country. I can’t verify that, but as an eighteen, soon to be nineteen year old, and seeing Arabs all around with flies buzzing around empty eye sockets, I believed it.
Good old Wheelus AFB, I was there in 65 - 66 same empty eye sockets and flies. Just out the back gate was a meat market which consisted of a camel caucus hanging in open air in one hundred plus temp, covered in flies. Butcher would slap the caucus to clear the flies, slice you off a steak wrap it in brown paper and and off Mohammed would go, anticipating that fine meal to come.
