“Private citizens are not eligible for Secret Service protection. Palins could hire their own though.”
The Palins were forced into the national political spotlight, not for their own good, but for what was and is best for the USA.
They have sacrificed their privacy and their safety for America and simply because some Liberals fear Sarah Palin and chose to resort to violence in order to shape their own political agenda, we owe Secret Service protection to the Palins.
Vice Presidents lose their Secret Service protection six months after leaving office. IIRC, Cheney’s was extended an additional six months. There is no way SS will (or should) expend taxpayer funds to protect a former vice presidential candidate.
Sarah Palin wasn’t ‘forced’ into anything. She’s a big girl who chose to run for and served as a state governor and who chose to accept the offer to run as a vice presidential candidate. She’s written books, had tv shows, and earns significant speaking fees. She’s not a poor yokel pulled from the cabbage patch. And,, like every other notable or celebrity, she has to engage her own security detail when and if she feels threatened. She’s made enough $ since ‘08 to afford whatever protection she believes is advisable for her and her family.
Now Mrs. Palin is forced into the "national political spotlight"?
Previously, her supporters insisted that she was forced from office.
Pushed around on all sides.
Being a leader is super hard. I don't think I can support someone who lacks the ability to prevent themselves from being forced into one horrible situation after another.

This is the most sensible post I have seen in FR for a long time. No other politician in history has been faced the same degree of persecution as Gov Palin, and conservatives must do everything to ensure the protection of both the governor and her family.
