What has America done for the music tradition of Western Civilization?
WesternCulture

Or sooner; What has the US done to the music tradition of Western Civilization?

There are plenty of Americans who understand and appreciate great composers like Beethoven, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach and Mozart, but something must be wrong with a nation that year after year produces crap like the music of 50 Cent, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

I'm European and I admit we make a lot of worthless music too, but at least we Europeans are fostered in the great tradition of composers like the giants mentioned above.

“Virtually all of America’s music comes from negroes and I will openly say I am not proud of it,”

Bluegrass and Country comes out of Appalachia IIRC and those folks are Scots Irish for the most part. The Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers come to mind.

Let’s compare Hemingway with J.K. Rowling while we’re at it.

OK

Nice, but Hemingway wins.

Humanity topped out with Mozart.

After Mozart wrote his unfinished Requiem, its been downhill ever since.

Whenever I think of Jazz, an image of Bill Clinton invades my consciousness.

Negro spirituals, which W. E. B. Du Bois, in his book The Soul of Black Folk (Chicago; McClurg, 1903) called the only art form native to America, can be quite melodic.

No personal offense meant but I can't believe that a vile communist, W. E. B. Du Bois, is quoted here on Free Republic. He lived the remainder of his disgraceful life in Ghana.

I agree with Pat Metheny Kenny’s talents are way too teeny.

I’m sure that ALL of the musicians in Beethoven’s time were all serious performers and composers. Ha!

C’mon, every culture has its pop music. At the time Mozart was criticized for the crassly commercial and unserious Magic Flute.

In any culture there is pop music being written and played. In these times, we can record it and take it beyond taverns and the town square.

Which just means you've fallen farther ...

We were too late to the dance for our own Mozart or Beethoven, so we had to settle for second-rate hacks like Bernstein and Phillip Glass and even Aaron Copland.

You've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. We started a whole lot closer.

(With the exception of John Williams and Louis Moreau Gottschalk.)

The last few to pop up on Pandora:

Carlos Vives
Heather Nova
Reik
Rebecca Pidgeon
Roberto Carlos
Laura Pausini
The Martinis
Simone
Jonatha Brooke
Marisa Monte
Sara Valenzuela
Fisher
Astor Piazzolla
Billy McLaughlin
Umphrey’s McGee
Ivete Sangalo
Oscar Castro-Neves

Stretches the definition of “American” but Pandora is a wonderful thing.

I guess when our ancestors came over because life in the old country sucked, they couldn’t afford to bring the orchestra.
