Why do Red States keep electing Democrat Governors and Senators!
I think it’s a check and balance. Can’t really trust either party. Vote for grid lock, so things don’t get worse. That’s one theory.
Actually it’s largely the Kansas City and St. Louis areas that carried the day for Nixon. A local politician once said that the only election Nixon ever lost was when people of color were upset with him.
Attorney General, or state auditor, seems to be a stepping stone to the Governor’s chair. I think that’s because of the name recognition they get from news reports.

In many cases it’s because Karl Rove gets to pick the Republican candidates...and good conservatives wind up not running. So, as here in Missouri, you get a guy like Akin, who probably would have been a fine Senator, but didn’t have the background to know how to stay clear of radioactive questions.
