A clerk one time at a FedEx insisted that a shipment to New Mexico would be an international shipment.
As I was driving into work today, our local talk radio host was talking about a family member who was visiting him here (Albuquerque) from Arizona. The family member went to use a credit card and it was denied. When he called customer service, they said it was flagged because he was traveling outside the United States (I'm guessing the rep said that, but that it may have actually been flagged due to the location used, i.e. common fraud location - happened to my folks when they used a credit-card only fuel station in California years back). He said the brother stated over the phone that it was "New" Mexico, not "Mexico".
Homer Simpson once queried “There’s a NEW Mexico now??”

I lived in New Mexico for 12 years, and I heard a lot of "you're not in the United States" stories from people. That's why the license plates say "New Mexico USA."
