Luther wasn’t the cause of the “Reform” movement because he actually wasn’t trying to reform anything. He had an entirely different project, and if anybody actually bothers to read him (which few Protestants do), you’ll see that his opinions, especially later in his career, were perilously close to Islam (based on Arianism and its daughter heresies) and that he was quite self obsessed.
There were many movements in the Church - think of St Francis - that were devoted to real reform.
Large institutions always bog down in their institutionality and often need to be shaken up. But Luther didn’t want to do that. He set the pattern for Protestant divisiveness, which gathers people around a charismatic leader who is convinced he alone has the truth. And I’m not saying this person isn’t sincere or that he isn’t doing the best he can - but it’s not a formula for creating a lasting community.
The problem is that if you have anything other than Jesus and the Church he founded (that is, if Luther or Henry VIII intervenes), once the charismatic founder is gone, you’re stuck with the remains of his vision. And we can see exactly how well that has gone for mainstream Protestantism.
Other churches will then bubble up, founded by other charismatic visionaries, and will go on for as long as they can and then collapse.
Personally, I think Luther had significant personal problems and it’s sad that he got the influence he did (which was, like many other things in the history of religion, for political reasons).
I think people like Wesley and other Protestants who had grown up in Protestantism after Luther were very sincere and did a lot of good. But it’s very hard for their followers because there’s no doctrine, no authority, and things just tend to fall apart then, no matter how sincere people are.
....”When American and European leaders ‘insist’ that Islam has nothing to do with the latest Islamic atrocity, they are not referencing a religion practiced by Muslims, but an imaginary religion that ‘they imagine’ Muslims must practice because the alternative is the end of everything that they believe in”.......
When they deny the truth about anything they have no alternative but to ‘invent’ a lie ......and the enemy of men’s souls will always be there to hand it to them.
I bet in Iraq there were many who would consider themselves moderate...who wasted no time signing up with ISIS. When push comes to shove, unless they’re ready to die, they will not be your friend no matter how liberal they might be.
....”The Protestant movement destroyed the unity of Christianity”....
What rubbish!
Had the church not aligned itself with the Government of Rome and develope it’s doctrines in order to ‘serve’ Rome....and then bring in pagan rites, declaring their pope as representing Christ.... and practices God said we are not to do, there would not have been a need to Protest.
..and the catholic church continues to the same today.
Truth Ping!
Greenfield nails it.
Islam is Islamofascism, a liberals worst nightmare, and it is, as we speak, biting virtually every lefty liberal in the arse, including liberal fascist Obama.Thats why Obama has no strategy, the cognitive dissonance between the beheading murders and the “moderate Islam myth” dictates his inaction.Instead he seeks a coalition of liberals so his liberal fascism may reign supreme over Obama’s opposition, who all are beginning to understand just how Islamofascism must be handled.
The 11th of September in 8 days will likely show us all the truth. Obama has left us wide open for attack.
Mum and Dad have a little pr+ck for a son, he’s set fire to the house and flushed the cat down the toilet, he’s tried to drown his sister and they are out of their minds, what to do? The psychiatrist tells them he’s really just a frustrated little boy who needs lots of attention, and telling him he’s BAD will be counterproductive. Tell him he’s loved and cherished, and a very special little boy and how much you love him, and how you know he wouldn’t really want to hurt anyone. Praise him. Make him feel important...there’s really no such thing as a bad child you know...
And one day he takes his father’s guns and after disposing of his parents, he takes the weapons out into the street and shows us all just what good little boys who wouldn’t hurt anyone, who are just bored and misunderstood, are capable of.
That’s islam. They just want your praise, love and attention.
Before they kill you. ( For allah, who rewards them with Paradise for our blood.)
I wonder how it will play out. This Sept 11 could prove interesting. I would advize evryone to avoid crowds and
airports on that day.
I’m having difficulty in choosing between islam and ebola. What killed more people, mohammadanism or the black plague?

Just a few weeks ago a Catholic-born, American man - a former military school student, special forces aspirant, law enforcement officer and bodybuilder — set off on a path far from any hed envisioned for himself as a kid in North Carolina: on the other side of the world, in Lebanon, he was trying to figure out how to get into Syria and join ISIS, the most radical, bloodthirsty terrorist group of our times.

Six Muslim Men Dress As Police Officers, Take Pregnant Woman, And Gang Rape Her...

Six Muslim men in Kabul, Afghanistan, dressed themselves as police officers, went into a busy street and ambushed a car, attacking the men and seizing the women, one of whom was pregnant. They then began to gang rape all of them, even the pregnant woman, in public view. The victims were coming back from a wedding party...
He needs to be dropped into the middle of Kabul without his security guard.
Horseshit..not mine.
“Islam wants total submission of everybody, throughout the world, to an insane law that would enslave us all and crush the West, modern civilization and Christianity. Theres a difference.”
That is the Sunni Islamic vision.
The Twelver Shiite (the ruling party of Iran) vision is:
Islam wants total submission of everybody by spilling as much blood as possible, throughout the world, and then, the 12th Imam having smelled the blood scent will climb out of the well he resided in for the past 600 years, to bring every single human being into Paradise, aka human earthy extinction.
Theres a difference.
“True, there has never been a Muslim Reformation. And the way Mohammed wrote his crazy book there probably never can be one.”
In fact, Mohammed specifically forbade any such alteration of the words of allah: anyone who would attempt such a reformation or alteration of the words of allah, it is incumbent on all muslims to kill the infidel.
Islam can never be reformed - give up the idea. Such a thought is what Greenburg was speaking about: Islamic reformation exists only in the minds of liberals et al.
Sorry: Greenfield, not Greenburg.
I also agree that Wesley was an outstanding theologian and Christian. It has been one of the greatest sadnesses of my life that the church operating under the name United Methodist has become such a horror of liberal Marxism since the 60s.
Both Luther and Wesley, and other Reformers, were as fascinated by the then-cutting-edge technology, printing. It was the Internet/Facebook/email/Twitter of its day, and European societies rushed to put everything in print and teach people to read. Both L and W thought that by writing their catechesis (one of Wesley's gems is A Plain Account of Christian Perfection), people could be free of the personality conflicts and petty politics of dependence on a priesthood for the gospel. Then, people aspired to read lengthy works and to speak with a beauty of language never surpassed since Shakespeare. Who knew it would all go downhill, just as long posts on FR have so soon given way to memes, snarks and pictograms? :-)
And while i agree that most Protestants don't read Luther or any of the classic theologians, most Catholics don't either. Both groups contain perhaps 10% who have a rough Idea of what's going on. Maybe 1% are truly literate. But the more one reads, the more one sees, in my case, the need for reunification of the Church Universal and a degree of reconciliation of ways to manage differences. Now more than ever, as we have but one true enemy, and his kingdom demands absolute submission at the point of a sword.
