So why would the USAF build a hangar tall enough to house a jumbo jet?

Wasn't a chemically pumped, laser equipped, 747 undergoing development? It was intended to take out ballistic missiles during the boost phase. A smaller, truck mounted version has successfully demonstrated it's capabilities by destroying mortar and artillery shells in flight.
